Do I Need to Invest in Expensive Gear to Start Streaming on Twitch?

No, you don’t need to start with the most expensive gear. While high-end equipment can provide superior quality, many budget-friendly options are suitable for beginners. You can gradually upgrade your gear as your Twitch channel grows and you gain more experience.

Streaming Backdrop Gear

Rob has used a variety of IKEA Display Cases for his models over the years, with LED Lights in each to keep them lit.

  • IKEA Shelf System – Good amount of storage without breaking the bank- in the background of all Rob’s videos
  • Smaller IKEA Shelf – Same as above, just a slightly smaller version
  • IKEA Detolf Glass Case – Solid for displaying your hobby masterpieces, although it was a little difficult to move
  • IKEA Fabrikor Glass Case-  Smaller “phone booth” case with a wide footprint and adjustable legs
  • IKEA Milsbo Glass Case- Taller double-doored option for large amounts of miniatures
  • LED Lights for Cases – Helps illuminate any cabinets for displaying your miniatures
  • Dx Racer Chair– A good chair is something you don’t want to skip out on if you find yourself at the hobby desk. This is what Rob used to use himself for about five years
  • Razer Iskur Chair Gaming Chair- The new kid on the block featuring dedicated lumbar support, Rob has been using this chair for the last few months and loves it!
  • Purple Pad makes any chair better – hobbying takes a lot out of you, and this pad is great for long hours in the chair.

What is the Most Important Piece of Streaming Gear For a Beginner Streamer?

For a beginner, a good-quality microphone is often the most important piece of gear. Clear and crisp audio is crucial for engaging with your audience effectively. A USB microphone like the Blue Yeti or Audio-Technica ATR2100x-USB is an excellent choice for starters.

Desk & Presentation

Rob stream camera

This is the handheld camera Rob uses for anything his base setup doesn’t cover. Needless to say, it’s an extremely nice camera.

  • Printer – Not 100% necessary, but it doesn’t hurt to be able to print out aids every now and then.
  • Monitors – Any set of monitors you’re comfortable with is fine, but at least two are highly recommended for ease of use. These are 60 Hz refresh rates, so not the best for online gaming if that is your thing.  If you are going to use them with a monitor stand (like this one), make sure they are VESA compatible too!
  • Computer:  (desktop) or Laptop – It doesn’t have to match exactly, but you will need a decent computer if you plan on using it while streaming.  We use this desktop for 3D modeling, graphics (like Photoshop), and Video editing; it is a workhorse!  For on-the-go event coverage and such, this Razer laptop keeps the team up and running with all the tasks we may need to do
  • Webcam – If you’re going to be streaming, having a good webcam is a must. The Logitech 920 or 930 is crucial.
  • Mic: For studio recording, the Blue Yeti is the standard for podcasts, webcasts, etc. You really need to start with this, and you’ll keep it for a long time. This doesn’t work so well for audiobook recording, though.  You can even mount it to your desk with a boom arm, but it isn’t super necessary.
  • Keyboard – It’s important to use what you are comfortable with, but this one is nice if you get used to it.
  • Mouse – Once again, a preference thing, but Rob found this to be good for comfortability.
  • Studio Lights – The number of overhead lights you need is based on your lighting needs, luckily these aren’t very expensive
  • Stream Deck – Good for goofs and gaffs while streaming, can be programmed to do a plethora of things
  • OBS for streaming – Great software that is completely free and can do pretty much everything you need after your stream is working
  • Handheld Camera – More expensive than the overhead camera, but you can use that model if you want to save some money. This is 4K and has plenty of optional attachments.
  • Rode Wireless Mics– on the wishlist is this nifty mic setup that has great ratings and works with most video cameras. Perfect for videos, and remote shoots in the game room, this seems to do the trick!

What Kind of Camera Should I Use For Streaming on Twitch?

The choice of camera depends on your budget and requirements. Many streamers start with a webcam, such as the Logitech C920, which offers good video quality at an affordable price. If you’re looking for higher quality, DSLR or mirrorless cameras like the Sony A6400 or Canon EOS 90D can provide exceptional video, but they require additional accessories like capture cards.

Hobby Desk

This is where Rob completes all his tutorials and hobbying using all of the materials seen in the picture and listed below:

  • Adjustable Height Desk – Good for standing or sitting due to the adjustability.
  • Standing Mats – If you prefer standing, these mats will save your feet during longer sessions.
  • Rinse Well – Simple device helps clean and rinse brushes quickly.
  • Quick Grab Drawers – Some cheap and effective storage units that get the job done.
  • Wet Palette – Solid Palette that will keep your palette in working condition for as long as you need.
  • Airbrush – Let’s be honest; you want an airbrush anyway.
  • Compressor – Perfect to keep your airbrush running.
  • Gooseneck Bottle – Easy bottle to help with cleaning the airbrush after use.
  • 2ft Wide Black Construction Paper Sheet – Keeps the display area clean for presentation.
  • Airbrush Hood – Picks up particles while working to help keep the air clean.
  • Hobby Go-Bag – Good for storing paints at home and while traveling.
  • Artist Easel Simple stand that pairs with the to-go bag foam to prop up the paints at home.
  • Project Bin – Easy way to sort minis and secure them with a metal sheet and magnetized bases.
  • Metal sheet – Bottom half of the Project Bin above.
  • Magnetized bases – Bases used on minis for the project bin.
  • C-Stand for the Overhead Camera – Stable platform for using the overhead camera without getting in the way.
  • Overhead Camera – Solid affordable camera that can be used for multiple purposes.
  • Overhead Triple Bright Lamp – Rob uses two of these, but you really should be fine with one over your workstation.

How Important is Good Lighting For Twitch Streaming?

Lighting is crucial for creating a professional-looking stream. Proper lighting can improve your camera’s image quality and make you look more appealing on-screen. You can start with budget-friendly LED ring lights or softbox kits and then invest in more advanced lighting setups as your channel grows. We recommend the Overhead Triple Bright Lamp, and Rob uses 3 of them.
