This no airbrush base tutorial features another amazing base from Elrik’s Hobbies. This painting is all free hand. It starts off with some drybrushing, highlighting the metal bits, and keeping it gritty to keep the with Orky theme of the model that’s going on this base.
Start off with some Army Painter Gun Metal and grab your large utility brush. Rub your paint on some paper, dabbing off most of the paint and then start scratching it across our base. Super quick and easy. Don’t focus on any smoothness.
This allows you to keep it a little sloppy, but don’t get lazy. We can relax a bit with this base, focusing more on speed. After the Gun Metal drybrush, grab some Greedy Gold and start on the pipes and accents of the base.
Like the drybrushing, you can build the gold tone up super quick, not focusing on keeping it clean. Grab some Strong Tone mixed with Dark Tone to make a nice slurry that we will drag all over this base. Build up a nice wash.
Don’t worry about reactivating the paint. This base will keep a gritty theme for the Ork army that it will accentuate.
Next, we’ll paint the divider lines on the base using a brown base and highlighting it up with some yellow. Keep adding yellow to the brown on the line, keeping with the Ork and gritty theme.
Flash Gitz Yellow finishes out the yellow, keeping it thin to subtly match the browns and yellows to make the yellow really work. This creates an electric color and saves you the hassle of adding a million yellow coats over a much darker base color.
To finish the base, and to keep with the Orky them, add some chevrons to the yellow lines with a base black color. Hold your brush steady, using more of the tip of the brush. If the black chevrons look a little faded, just go with it to keep the grimy base theme.
