Get ready Ultramarines fans for the next step in the Masterclass series of painting Marneus Calgar with Jack of Clubs Painting: glazes and wash!

Part three of the Marneus Calgar masterclass focuses on glazes and washes and how both techniques can really make this model shine. Once we’re done, all the glazes and washes will be sealed with some Matte Varnish to keep everything in a uniform paint scheme so that we can move on to detail work when we are done.

This masterclass will be the big turning point in how this model will look on the tabletop.

For the start of this masterclass, we are working on the Ultramarines emblems on Marneus’ armor. Use Vallejo Dark Blue Pale to build up a nice white color by using grey colors that blend well to form a nice near white. Next up is Celestra Grey, in a near drybrush technique to begin the steps for glazing this miniature. Glazing is the technique of applying very thin coats of paint in a number of layers to apply a brighter filter to which colors you are using. After Celestra Gray is added with the glazing technique, use Ulthuan Grey next as a much brighter grey, almost an off-white. This technique of glazing with grey makes the emblems look white without using any pure white paint.

As a next glazing step, the browns and red of the purity seals are given their respective colors in very thin coats over them. For the browns, Jack uses a number of browns in multiple very thin layers to glaze them up to nearly white color for the purity seal parchment. For the wax portion, deep reds are glazed up to have a nice ruddy, red brown.

Moving on to the wash steps, Jack uses a mix of Dark Tone and Quickshade Wash Mixing Medium are mixed together to form the wash base for this model. This is used to lather all over the model, wicking away any excess. Use your brush to move the wash around the model, wicking away until the wash puddles are all gone.
