The community might focus on GW’s shortcomings more often than not, but there is plenty of positives as well. These are the 3 things Games Workshop is stupid good at.
Games Workshop’s influence over the hobby world has exploded in recent years. And while no company is perfect, (yes, we’d all like to see some changes come from the way GW handles certain things), at the end of the day, GW is by far one the best model makers out there.
This is the first of a multi-part series on everything Games Workshop, starting with the things they are really good at!
1. High-Quality Models Packed With Detail
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. There is hardly any other company on the market that can keep pace with GW’s plastic model quality and rate at which they release them.
Sure, the price has gone up along with the new minis we’re getting, but we are seeing new records broken for how much attention to detail GW actually puts in their miniatures.
Whether the models are used for large-scale 40k games or some specialist skirmish games, you can see that a lot of thought has gone into each sculpt. Shoot, if you didn’t know any better you’d assume these Ogryn were all characters.
2. Making Engaging Games and Fluff (Lore)
GW streamlined the rules for 40k and AoS to make them easy to get into. But in games like Kill Team, Necromunda, Titanicus, etc. they are able to zoom into the rules and add layers of depth to the game. From broken bones to head injuries sustained by your fighters, you really feel immersed in what’s happening as you roll the dice and move your models.
As for the fluff, they’ve got years and years of a lore bank already established and have captivated fans (both tabletop and not) to stay hooked on GW’s universes. With Black Library constantly releasing novels on 30k, 40k, AoS and more, fans are able to get a much more focused side of the lore that is only touched on in the overall look of what GW has their hand in.
3. Painting Tutorials
One great thing that might be taken for granted on GW’s side of things is their painting tutorials. Yeah, we all got hurt when Duncan left. But the great thing about their videos is that there’s literally no fat to them at all. You don’t have to click through a 15-minute video waiting to get past an intro and a guy talking on a bunch of other things before he gets down to business.
Usually, the painter says what colors he needs, what paintbrush he’s using, and then you see a frame swap to the finished product step-by-step.
(swoosh)
At the end of the day, GW has definitely created some outstanding content in the realm of minis and overall hobby promotion. It’s clear that they like seeing their miniatures painted and looking great in our collections. But beyond that, they also go the extra mile at creating unnecessary (but completely welcome) fluff for the most popular characters!
What are some of the things that you think GW does very well? What’s your favorite miniature out of the whole line? Do you have a favorite Black Library book?
