Three more off-meta army lists emerged in these 9th Edition 40k tournaments over the weekend- take a look at these homebrew lists!
9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out these awesome homebrew lists that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and this just goes to show that it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.
Top 3 Homebrew 40k Army Lists October 17-18th
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
Northern Front Open GT: Chaos Daemons- Jeremy Poon
For this Chaos Undivided Daemon list, there are a few cool choices Jeremy chose to make on the list. One of which is taking 6 squads of 5 nurglings totaling 30 models. IF you ever played against nurglings you’ll know how hard they are to kill considering how cheap they are. For the first set of HQs, they opted to take a Keeper of Secrets for the combat prowess and a Lord of Change for the Psychic support.
For Elites, they took 2 squads of 4 Beasts of Nurgle and a single fiend, most likely just to fill out the last bit of remaining points. But wow those Beast of Chaos may just be the newest broken units of 40k, as far as their resiliencies, and ability box out the enemy. Beware though taking them with Nurglings is a definite feel badsie for your opponent.
For the second detachment, a second Keeper of Secrets and a Shalaxi Hellbane are leading it, as they are both beaters in melee. Only a single squad of 9 Daemonettes, plus 2 more Fiends to round out the list.
Overall, the Slaanesh support in HQs is pretty standard, but this is a unique take due to the splash of Tzeentch and the 5 mand squads instead of min squads of Nurglings.
Northern Front Open GT: Necrons- Aden Garcia-Ahmadi
There’s haven’t been many Necron lists lately, however in a 30+ man tournament, this one still managed to get higher than top 10.
The first detachment has a Skorpekh Lord as the only HQ. These guys seem decent with good weapons, but they aren’t breaking any boundaries. The only Troop is a unit of 5 immortals, offering some decent ranged attacks. Two squads of 3 Skopekh Destroyers were taken to match the Skorpekh Lord and march up into melee. Lastly for the first detachment is a squad of 6 Scarabs and 6 Wraiths. Scarabs offering good units to tie up targets as distractions, while Wraiths can try to enter melee and knock out units in the commotion.
The second detachment has an Overlord leading it with Tachyon Arrow, a 50-50 one time use shot that can deal great damage from extreme range. He is supported by 2 stock squads of warriors, nothing too complicated. Followed by a Shard of the Deceiver, it’ll be interesting to see if people still opt to take other shards now that Void Dragon has come out. Three more Scarabs to help tie up units, and 6 destroyers to offer even more ranged support. Lastly, 2 Ghost Arks to help march some of your melee units up the board, and just blast.
Northern Front Open GT: Night Lords- Thomas Cruickshank
The Night Lords list decided to go for a single detachment. For HQs, they took a chaos lord and Daemon Prince for re-rolls, while the Master of Possession offers decent psychic support. Troops were one squad of 20 cultists for some board control and two squads of 10 Chaos Marines with double plasma guns in each.
Moving onto Elites, there’s a Helbrute, possibly to take advantage of the various Helbrute stratagems, and 8 Possessed, which are decent in melee for the points. Fast Attacks consist of a single squad of 10 Raptors with stock load-outs. Heavy Support brings a Defiler, 5 havocs, 4 of which are sporting autocannons for dealing with chaff, and a Maulerfiend which can tear it up in melee.
Lastly, for Transport, there are two identical Rhinos to help get your troops up the board without gett too harassed.
This list is interesting because it’s kind of all over the place, that does mean that you get tons of options as far as playing out your games, and that’s when a good general can really shine.
Overall each of these lists offers a different approach to the meta which currently seems to be Marines taking advantage of their more elite options and trying to outvalue opponents.
