One more off-meta 40k army lists emerged in the Salt Classic GT Tournament, do you like that homebrews see success in 9th Edition?
9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out these awesome homebrew lists that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and just goes to show that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

Salt Classic GT: Mark Perry- Chaos
First, up for chaos is an Emperor’s Children Patrol led by Lucius and a Dark Apostle. Lucius is an amazing duelist, while the Apostle has some valuable support effects due to his prayer ability assuming you get them off.
15 Noise Marines provide some decent ranged weapons in the troop slot, although they are kinda pricey, they seemed to work for him here.
A total of 18 Terminators ends the patrol with a mix of claws and bolters on pretty durable bodies for a flexible squad that can take on most things to decent efficiency.
Then he decided to switch it up and run a generic heretic Astartes patrol lead by the fantastic psyker Ahriman to buff troops with consistency and ease. 5 Plague Marines offer durable bodies to push up the board and a flail in case they get into melee. The Tallyman helps buff the Plague Marines, and can also get a few CP throughout the game. The Foul Blightspawn is a cheap body that can deny an enemy model from fighting in melee, which is fantastic if you are able to take advantage of it. A single Chaos Spawn ends this patrol and acts as the only Khorne unit in the list just to round out extra points.
Lastly, the third detachment is a supreme command with none other than Mortarion himself. As one of, if not the best model in the game, it’s really easy to see why a soup list would take Morty. He is the warlord too, and although you cant take full advantage of his friendly auras due to not having many Death Guard units, the auras that affect enemies are good enough to make up for the shortcoming. Not to mention he is a beast in combat all on his own.
Overall this list offers a little bit of a different approach but we like it because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta.
Even better they got great results from the player who piloted it! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.
