Vallejo has joined the speed painting contrast fun with their new Xpress Color paints in these how-to-painting tutorial videos!
Vallejo is known for great paints already, so it’s interesting to see them going this route with a more contrast-style paint. Now we can see how it works and what it can offer in terms of a one-coat solution that sets it apart from the rest.
Still, it can be nice to have something from a brand you like; more alternatives are always better.
Before we dive into the test video, the paints were developed in part by Angel Giraldez and Juan Hidalgo. Let’s check out what we do know so far.
New Vallejo Xpress Color Range
Here’s more about the new Xpress colors:
When we need to paint multiple figures in a fast way, Xpress Color is the ideal choice, these matt colors are specifically formulated to paint miniatures in a fast and easy way.
The main characteristics are its excellent capillarity that allows the color to flow easily over the miniature surface, settling on all the reliefs and more intensely in the crevices of the figure, creating a contrast effect with a single layer of paint.
It’s recommended to apply Xpress Color on a white or grey primed or painted surface. The color will create light areas on the reliefs, saturated mid-tones and intense shadows in the crevices of the figure.
Like all our products, they are very versatile and can be applied over any color in the range to create soft shading and contouring effects, to create glazes or filters and to blend transitions between color tones.
Xpress Color can be mixed together, or can be diluted with Xpress Medium to modify or create new shades.
Thanks to Angel again for more about the release dates on these:
So we hope this also means the singles will be available soon, with the bigger sets coming in early 2023!
Juan Hidalgo’s Hour-Long Spotlight of the Paint on IG
First taste of Vallejo Xpress Color, go and watch my live demonstration during the Freakwars in Madrid (Spanish obviously l, sorry in advance):

Secondly, this is the first ever miniature painted EXCLUSIVELY using just Xpress Color and white for touch ups and the eyes, enjoy
As we can see, this stuff looks pretty decent, with Hidalgo using it easily and even on a small miniature too!
Vallejo Contrast Killer: Xpress Paint Painting Tutorial
In this Vallejo Xpress Paint walkthrough and painting tutorial, Juan Hidalgo shows how to use the new paints and what they can do!
As we said, It also looks like singles will be available very soon, but for sets and such, it looks like we won’t grab those until early next year.
For now, it looks like most of the big paint companies have jumped on the contrast hype train, as Green Stuff World recently made a similar product, and of course, the Army Painter Speedpaint is great as well.
Are you excited to see Vallejo expand their line into contrast-style paints with these new Xpress Color Paints?
