Painting Monsters Made Simple: Peachy Painting Tutorial

painting MonstersThe model he’s painting up this time is from Draco Studios’ latest Kickstarter, and it’s an awesome mini, but you could also use these tips for Tyranids, Seraphon, Daemons, and Orks! Let’s see how to do it!

Step 1:

painting Monsters 2He starts by spraying the whole thing white, mixing Mortarion Grime with some water, and washes everything with it, focusing on the recesses. He then highlights Ivory over all the monster parts to pick out the raised areas. Once dry, he does a thin-downed Mantis Warrior Green coat over the monster’s top. He then goes back and does another drybrush with the Ivory to tie everything together. After that, he will add some texture by taking a sponge and dabbing on the color where he feels it looks good. Then, he takes Grass Green and adds that to the top of the body or anywhere you want a brighter skin tone. Now, he sponges on some Black Green to give the very top of the skin a bit of roughness. To finish this step, he goes back to the Matis Warrior Green and glazes over all the green to blend it.

Step 2:

painting Monsters 3To add some highlights to the darker areas, he drybrushes on Grass Green. Now, going back to the underbelly, he highlights it with Ivory, then he uses white for the highlights. Now it’s time for the pattern on the back. He just found some reference photos he liked and followed that for the pattern, so you can use his pattern or pick one you like more. He’s starting with Deep Orange and following his reference photo. Next up, he highlights that with Light Orange, just in a smaller area than before. For the final stage of the pattern, he uses Sunny Skin Tone and just hits the highest highlights and the edges of the skin. Lastly, here, for the eyes, he paints them Deep Orange and does a little dot of Ivory.

Step 3:

painting Monsters 4Now for the bone areas. He starts with Grimy Grey and hits all the teeth, horns, bones, etc. After that, he applies Seraphim Sepia, followed by Targor Rageshade. Then, at the bases of the bones, he uses Agrax Earthshade to make the transition nice. For the first highlight, he uses Grimy Grey and follows the contours of the bones, and for the very tips uses white. To tie in the highlights, he applies Seraphim Sepia to it all. For the tongue, he starts with Magos Purple and does a base coat on everything he wants to be purple. With that dry, he returns and does a small highlight with Grimy Grey. To finish it off, he applies a thinned downed Magos Purple.
