A New Edition of Warhammer Is On The Way In 2024

warhammer space marine 40k age of sigmar wal horA new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar is on the way from Games Workshop, perhaps sooner than any of us had thought.

For over a decade now, Games Workshop has kept a very regular three-year sales plan, or cycle, with rotating releases for three of their biggest lines, Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, and Citadel Hobby. Think of a summer movie-style blockbuster release every year, right when times are the slowest for retail sales. This year, it may be time for a new Edition of AoS!

So, what is a three-year sales plan or cycle from Games Workshop? Well, every year in the cycle so far, GW has had a big new release for either Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40k, or Citadel hobby supplies (like paint).

In 2022, we had the new Shades and Contrast release. In 2021, we had Dominion for AoS, and the year before that, the 9th edition of Warhammer 40k. Most recently, in 2023, we had 10th Edition 40k drop, which opens the door for their other big game, Age of Sigmar!

Not only has GW kept this cycle going for more than a decade, but GW has also extended the length of the latest General’s Handbook to last an entire year. Before we get into the GHB, here are the most recent editions of AoS:

  • 1st edition 2015 (End Times of Warhammer Fantasy)
  • 2nd edition 2018 (Nighthauts)
  • 3rd edition 2021 (Dominion)

The Generals Handbook Lines Up Perfectly

In the summer of 2023, Warhammer Community revealed a curious new season length for the General’s Handbook.

General's Handbook 2023

This is an important change in format, as it means the new season is double the length of previous ones. This book will be the go-to matched play resource for twice and long – all the way through to summer next year. You can still look forward to quarterly balance updates, to ensure that the metagame remains as balanced as possible.

The General’s Handbook Pitched Battles 2023-24 concentrates on the wizards who seek to profit from the primeval magic that suffuses Andtor, as well as those who hunt them down by using nullstone artefacts to weather their empowered and unbridled spellcasting.

This not only gives time for the meta to settle and GW to put more manpower behind the new edition, but it will also end right when the new edition would normally be released! If you’ve been waiting for a big change-up in the game, you might not have to wait long! Don’t be surprised if we start seeing previews from GW soon teasing a new edition of the game.

Whether you love the current meta and edition of AoS or hate it, you might not have much time left with the current edition!
