Gotrek might be a favorite for some. For others, he’s that guy that always shows up to the party but is NEVER invited. Here’s why!
For years, Gotrek has been a GW-writer favorite. He’s an unkillable Dwarf who’s able to grab any monster by the scruff of the neck and intimidate into submission. But recently, he’s joined the tabletop and is leaving feels badsies for anyone who isn’t Order.
Here’s Why Gotrek is “That Guy” in Age of Sigmar
At first, you’d notice that Gotrek is a Dwarf, which makes you think he’d be only allowable in armies like Dispossessed/Fyreslayers. However, He’s got a special rule that allows him to be brought by any army in the Order keyword. You might also know that he costs 525 points, which means he’s too expensive to be taken as an ally…normally. GW also made it possible for him to ignore the points-cost cap that all other factions have to adhere to. While it’s annoying enough as a Chaos, Death, or Destruction player to face him in Age of Sigmar, at least we have Warcry to enjoy amongst ourselves, right?
WRONG!
Warhammer Community also announced that Gotrek is going to be allowed in games of Warcry. Just after they boosted the game with monsters like Chimeras and such. And you know what Gotrek is good at killing? Monsters! He is quickly becoming the annoying frat bro that shows up to the party uninvited with his collar popped and drinks all the beer.
He’s also the kind of guy to make out with your girlfriend and there’s nothing you can do about it because he only takes a single point of damage, has a 3+++ wound shrug, and dishes out D6 mortal wounds. It’ll just take him a minute to walk across the room to get to you.
The sad thing is that Warcry is supposed to be all about Archaon’s domain. But when you roll it out on the table, Gotrek is able to whip Archaon like he’s a wet towel. While Archaon may be watching the bloodshed in his arena by Warcry Warbands, as soon as he sees Gotrek pull up, he shuts his windows and turns out the lights.
Taking this a bit further, think about this. In Age of Sigmar, Gotrek costs 520 pts. The usable Warcry Warbands in a Slaves to Darkness army don’t cost a fraction of that. How bad is the butt-whoopin’ going to be coming from a Dwarf who is able to wring the necks of Greater Daemons when he goes against a handful of emaciated barbarians with bone clubs? We’ll tell you how bad.
while he’s slow, he has abilities that let him close with enemies faster, plus a Quad ability that gives him a bonus attack that adds double the dice value used to determine damage – for a potential 18 damage for a critical hit!
In a single attack, Gotrek will be able to one-shot almost any fighter. For bigger leaders, they have may have somewhere between 2 and 5 wounds…
Coming from a non-order player’s perspective- It’s slightly annoying to see Gotrek get past all other rules armies normally have to follow. But even more so to have him appear in a skirmish game where power levels are scaled way down. (no I’m not salty at all I’ll bring all 1500 points against him I can).
What are your thoughts on Gotrek in Age of Sigmar? What’s the best way for armies with hardly any shooting to deal with him?
