Painting Icy Blue Horns on Your Beastclaw Raiders!

how-to-paint-beastclaw-raiders-icy-horns ogor mawtribesOgors are back in action with a new Battletome and it’s time to take a look at bringing your Beastclaw Raiders up beyond Tabletop quality!

Now that Ogors have been brought up to speed with a new set of rules, you might have decided to pick up a new army. Ogors and Beastclaws joined forces in their latest book. Let’s take a closer look at bringing your Beastclaw’s mounts to the next level.

Icy Horn Effects on Beastclaw Raider Mounts

Macragge BlueRob started off by laying down a base coat of Mechanicus Standard Grey at the base of the horns. This keeps the finished metal from having a blue undertone to it. Next, he lays down the base blue using an airbrush and some Citadel Air Macragge Blue.

Lothern HighlightOnce the base blue is dry you’ll want to start the highlight process using another of Citadel’s air range, this time with Lothern Blue.  He cuts the highlights in using his airbrush here as well.
Ulthuan HighlightNext up is another highlight on the horns branching from the lighter blue highlight using yet another Citadel air paint. Instead of using pure white for the final highlight, Rob uses Ulthuan Grey. This nearly-white color (that is a shade of blue) is great for highlights as it captures some of the underlying colors. It’s not as stark of a contrast as using pure white.

Drakenhoff GlazeAfter the final airbrush highlight is dry, its time to tie everything together with a glaze of Drakenhoff Nightshade mixed with a little bit of pledge floor cleaner. Before applying the glaze, it’s important to coat the model with a semi-gloss or full-gloss varnish. This protects the delicate airbrushed colors you just put on and to make for easy application of the glaze. The floor wax helps to break up the surface tension and stops the glaze from pooling as it dries, ensuring a smooth even coat.

These days Rob uses a 50/50 mix of Flow Improver and Matte Medium to cut washes and paints down and achieve the same results.

Bright HighlightTake your time making sure you watch where the painting pools on the horns. Once the glaze is dried its time to apply a final edge highlight using a little more Ulthuan Grey. This razor highlight is applied using a detail brush. Take your time with this one. It’s hard to cover up brightly-painted mistakes over a blue background.

Now it’s time to paint the rest of the model!
