About Rob Baer: Founder, Publisher, & Managing Editor of Spikey Bits, the leading tabletop gaming news website focused on the hobby side of wargaming and miniatures.

Rob also co-founded and is a panelist on the weekly Long War Podcast, which has over 350 episodes and focuses on tabletop miniatures gaming, specializing in Warhammer 40k, and spent six years writing for Bell of Lost Souls.

Every year, he and his co-hosts help host the Long War 40k Doubles Tournament at Adepticon and the Long War 40k Doubles at the Las Vegas Open, both of which attract thousands of players from around the world.

Rob has won many Warhammer 40k Tournaments over the years, including multiple first-place finishes in Warhammer 40k Grand Tournaments and even winning 1st place at the 2011 Adepticon 40k Team Tournament. He was even featured for his painting in issue #304 of Games Workshop’s White Dwarf Magazine.

With over 30 years of experience in retail and distribution, Rob knows all the products and exactly which ones are the best. As a member of GAMA (Game Manufacturers Association), he advocates for gaming stores and manufacturers in these difficult times. He is always looking for the next big thing to feature for the miniatures hobby, helping everyone provide the value consumers want.

While he’s played every edition of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy (since 5th Edition) and has been hobbying on miniatures since the 1980s, Titans of all sizes will always be his favorite! It’s even rumored that his hobby vault rivals the Solemnance Galleries, containing rulebooks filled with lore from editions long past, ancient packs of black-bordered Magic Cards, and models made of both pewter and resin.

Well the time has come once again to get geared up and ready for a big tournament, thusly the Nova Open. This year there will be a ton of top players on hand to compete in a variety of events, including Death Matches Thurday night, the Invitational on Friday, and the GT on Saturday and […]

If you click on the Armies on Parade label you’ll be able to scroll through some great looking armies, all at once. It’s […]

The Orkuisition is back!  “Counts as” is the new black, and this army is hot with it’s conversions innovative theme. Mastershake has been a ball of fire lately converting and painting up his Deff Kult army like a mad man to get ready for the Nova Open. Recently he finished up his DeffKnight conversion, and now all […]

Check out this sweet Diorama base my buddy Josh made for his Tzeentch Daemon prince. It’s pretty much all scratch built with a ton a green stuff. The premise for the scene is the Tzeentchy Daemon Prince shredded open an Ork Trukk, and after growing bored toying with the Nob, has banished him to kicking and screaming […]

Congrats to the winners, another first round has come and gone. This was the article I was going to write about my awesome games and how I qualified for ‘ard Boyz ( notice how I said “was”). Well that didn’t happen exactly (although I will be politicking to get in still). Instead me and my buddy were cheated by […]

Welcome back to more Orkuisition madness! Well Master Shake is really putting his all into this Converted Grey Knight Army, and I hope you are enjoying watching it develop as much as I am. Check out this Work In Progress shot of his “Deff Knight” counts as conversion.  Right now he feverishly working on the […]

MBG here with a possibly blasphemous question; why take a Librarian in a Grey Knight army? Sure, sure, the benefits are obvious; extra cover saves with Shrouding, extra Hammerhands, Armor Penetration from Might of Titans, and fun with Sanctuary, etc. just to name a few. But seriously though, is it worth taking a Librarian? I’m starting to say nay my friends […]

Well believe it or not ‘Ard Boyz prelims are almost here, and all the boys and girls are getting ready for battle!  The thing I’ve come to love about this event, is the complete shift in meta away from any standard tournament circuit type series. At ‘Ard Boyz you’ll see the most random lists in addition to a […]

So I need to get my creative juices flowing and maybe you can help.  I’ve had these converted Terminators for a few years now, and just got around to augmenting them with newer bits and such for my Iron Hands Army. Originally I wanted them to be all sweet Pre-Heresy style, but eventually I just settled on […]

I just updated the Spikey Bits Gallery a bit with some new work, as well as some older stuff.  There is a ton more material to go through, so stay tuned for that! If you have any questions about how I painted a particular fig please email me and I will be glad to help […]

Madness? This is the Orkuisition. Check out this Orky monstrosity inspired by my Looted Imperial Guard. My buddy Master Shake is making a Grey Knights / Inquisition themed army, and this is his first conversion; the Grot Raider Crusader (counts as, of course). As you can see many, many Trukks and Battlewagons died to fuel this conversion (no Bothan’s however […]

Since  all the new Space Marine books came out with rules for Razorbacks armed with Twin Linked Assault Cannon turrets, there has been quite a high demand for that turret loadout. Unfortunately the only way to actually get one is the Land Raider Crusader / Redeemer kit for $66, a price which has made the turret go for […]

Besides declare Waaaagh on the other gaming tables, of course? Bad Orky gorilla jokes aside, recently I decided to set up all my Ork models to take some pictures for the blog and prep for an upcoming Apocalypse game.  As it turns out I have a bunch of models, an embarrassing large amount actually, so many in fact that I […]

I remember the dark skies, the smell of brimstone and death hanging high almost as if to linger in the air.  The year was 2003, the Chaos Space Marines were on the warpath, and it was good to be bad. Nowadays while the skies have cooled with the times (and their abomination of a “5th […]
