Assemble Your Avengers: Marvel Champions Review

In Marvel Champions you will take on the role of a popular Marvel Comics hero with the task of thwarting a particular villain’s scheme. The basic game comes with five heroes and three villains to battle. The cast of heroes features Spider-Man, Black Panther, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, and Iron Man. The villains are Rhino, Klaw, and Ultron. Each villain can use one of several side schemes to add to the difficulty.

Marvel ChampionsAs a LCG Marvel Champions requires some deck construction. Each hero has unique cards for them specifically so you’ll start there. The next step is deck building, each hero will have a set of pre-determined cards specifically for them to use. Next, you will choose one of four archetypes. There is Leadership, Protection, Aggression, and Justice.

These cards will change how your play style will feel based on the combination you choose. Afterward, you will fill out the rest of your deck with basic cards and then you are ready to stop evil. Now some folks may not care for the deck building and customization aspects of the game. Luckily, included are a premade decklist for each hero and all three villains. This way you can jump into the game without much fuss.

Marvel ChampionsEach game you will be faced with a villain and their main scheme. The villain will start with a set amount of hit points based on player count and will add a set amount of threat each turn per player. Once there is a certain number of threats to the main scheme the heroes immediately lose. The only path to victory is to knock out the villain before this happens.

Each hero starts out in their alter ego side and can flip over into hero form in order to fight the villain. The villain will also respond to the hero based on what form they are in. If the hero is in alter ego form the villain will just scheme and add a threat to the main scheme. If the hero is in hero form, the villain will attack them directly.

I really like how you can customize the difficulty of the game and use different villains and side schemes to keep the game fresh. Each villain can be set to easy or hard mode by adjusting which level card you use. Once you knock out the villain once it upgrades into its next level. Defeat this version and the heroes win.

Marvel ChampionsWhat I’m excited about most in Marvel Champions is the expandability. Each month or so, a new hero will be released, fully playable from the package. Also, each new hero comes with a few new cards for its archetype. This will give you many more options for deck building customization. Not only will we receive new heroes to play as, but there will also be new scenarios featuring new villains to battle.

As far as new content here’s what we know we can look forward to. In the next week or so, there are Ms. Marvel and Captain America hero decks coming. There is also a new Green Goblin scenario pack coming soon. In February you can look forward to playing as the Mighty Thor. And as far as new villains there is also a Wrecking Crew scenario deck. This one intrigues me the most because you are fighting not just one but all four members of the Wrecking Crew at the same time. I’m blown away as to how this will play out.  It definitely sounds like it’s gonna be a difficult but fun time.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to play Marvel Champions yet, I definitely recommend you give it a whirl. I absolutely love it and can’t get enough and the constant stream of new content will keep it fresh and exciting. So whether alone or with a group of friends, there is some fun to be had here.
