Chronicles of Crime: Can You Crack the Case? REVIEW
In Chronicles of Crime, you and your team are members of Scotland Yard. You are presented with a case and from there are tasked with investigating crime scenes and questioning persons of interest. There are five different scenarios plus a tutorial mission to help teach the various mechanisms.
The gameplay is assisted by a scan and play app. Each character, location, and evidence card is linked to a QR code. Moving around the city you scan that location’s QR code to track where you are investigating. Scanning a character will allow you to question them. There is also four forensic contact player board that can help with either physical evidence, autopsy reports, or even psychological profiling.
At certain locations, you can investigate the crime scenes. This is done with the app by attaching a 3-D magnifying lens to your smartphone and actually looking around as if you are really there. The effect is pretty awesome you can look around and describe what you see to the other players so they can gather clues. It will ask if you want to let another player look but it will cost time, which affects your score at the end.
Chronicles of Crime is a very fun board game experience. The cases are very interesting and compelling. The range of difficulty is very satisfying as well. From the low-level tutorial, it slowly builds in difficulty as you progress to larger cases. I love a good mystery and this game scratches that itch well. There are several paths to come to a successful conclusion. Your endgame score will be higher if you hit all the clues and key evidence.
The components are vast. There are over 52 characters, 35 evidence, 10 special items, 17 locations, four forensic character boards, and an evidence board that simulates the pegboard used to connect people and evidence seen on various crime dramas. Plus since the cards use QR codes any cards can be used for any scenario as different characters.
There is also a few expansions planned as well. Welcome to Redview is set in the eighties and inspired by themes such as Twin Peaks, Riverdale, and stranger things. The Noir scenario casts the players as a single hard-boiled detective who uses unconventional methods to crack the case. A cyberpunk themed scenario in the works later on in the year.
Overall, I’m a fan of this game and like seeing the combination of technology with bird gaming to create a vibrant world for us to experience. I hope you have a chance to check this one out with your gaming group. I highly recommend this game for anyone interested in puzzles and mystery games.
