Horrified: A Graveyard Smash That’s Perfect For The Season
In Horrified you are playing as one of several heroes tasked with saving a town from monsters. But not just any monsters. We are talking about the classics here! Wolfman, Dracula, the Mummy, even the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and more! There are six various monsters you can face off against. All based on the Universal Studios monsters. You can fight anywhere from two at a time to four at once!
This, of course, is the difficulty scaling system. There is even a default recommendation setup as well. As you gain skill and success fighting off two of the monsters, you can up your game and face three or even four.
Timing is important in a game of Horrified. This is due to one of the two losing conditions. The first is the terror track. Each time you are defeated by a monster or a monster kills a villager you increase the terror meter. Once you make it to the skull symbol, that’s game over. Another way to lose and possibly the most common way is to run out of the monster deck.
Each player will take their turn consisting of moving, gathering objects, rescuing villagers, and working toward monster goals in hopes of defeating them. Once a players’ turn is over, they reveal a monster card. This will populate the board with possibly more items, villagers, or even a special effect based on a unique monster being played. Once a player takes a turn and cannot flip a monster card the heroes lose.
Each of the monsters in Horrified has a specific method of defeating them. Dracula, for example, requires that you find and smash all four of his coffins with at least six value worth of red items. Then you confront Dracula himself with nine value worth of yellow items. Some monsters are more complex than others and each combination may be tougher to deal with than another. The possibilities are endless and gives this game a fantastic replay value. Not to mention if you lose to a certain combination, you will immediately want to go back and try again.
Once all monster are defeated you immediately win the game. Victory is quite satisfying as it can definitely get hairy when the game gets down to the wire. The variety of different monsters and how to handle them makes each game unique and different.
Overall I do honestly believe Horrified has made it to my top cooperative game. I love the team building it provides as well as a fun challenge. If you are a fan of cooperative games or even looking for a good horror-themed game then definitely give this one a go.
It’ll make your game night a Fangtastic one! Mwah haw haw!
