Starving Artists is a 1-4 player game designed by Mike Wokasch. This game was brought to life via Kickstarter in 2016. Now a reprint project is live on Kickstarter which is also adding a 5th and 6th player expansion.

The game is a paint by cube themed game. Each of the many paintings has different colored squares which can be filled up with the various paint cubes. Once a painting has all the squares covered you can sell it. This gives you points as well as food.
In Starving Artists you are an artist trying to get by in life by selling paintings in order to afford food to eat. Each player has a nutrition meter to track whether you are starving or not. If your meter drops to zero then you starve to death and are out of the game. This also triggers the end of the game-round for the other players. Oddly enough, although rare, it’s entirely possible to win while dead.
Each day you get to take two of several available actions. You can buy a new canvas to work on. Another action is to work and gain more paints. Or you can even work on the paintings that you already own. Then in the evening, you can sell your completed paintings in order to eat.
Starving Artist is such a fun and beautiful game. As a backer to the original as well at this new project, I definitely recommend this game for your consideration. Each of the vast numbers of painting cards is based on actual paintings with the artist credited. I’ve learned a lot about artists from this game. The cubes look great on your paintings especially if you have some sunlight hitting them just right.
There are several pledge tiers you can back so a good chance of finding the one that works for you. There are a few add-ons such as art packs and a very nice playmat. The playmat keeps the play area nicely organized as well as being helpful for colorblind people.
