With it being Halloween today, what better way to embrace the dead then leading an army of undead to tear apart the living!
That being said even Nagash had to start somewhere, so this list builds around a “Start Collecting!” box and fills in the gaps with some cheaper but much needed units.
The Death “Start Collecting!” I selected is the Flesheating Court are in my humble opinion, really cool and takes you outside of traditional ghosts and zombies. It is costing around $65 on ebay right now.
You are looking at starting with a ton of points right off the bat:
- Abhorrent Ghoul King on Terrogheist (400 points) 1 of 4 leaders & 1 of 2 Behemoths
- 10 Crypt Ghouls (100 points) 1 of 2 battleline units
- 3 Crypt Horrors (140 points) no unit type
So you are sitting at 640 points, over half way there with a leader that can go toe to toe with pretty much anyone.
Even if it is not Halloween, your opponent is going to have nightmares of your king on a Terrorgheist! He flys up to 14 inches (depends on damage table) with 14 wounds and a 4+ save. He HEALS a D3 wounds every time it’s your hero phase. He is a wizard as well: he can cast magic, unbind, and his unique spell gives a 5+ ward save. His staying power shown, let’s talk about his damage output.
First the Terrorgheist has a range 10 missile attack that starts at value 6 (depends on damage table), there is no “to hit” or “to wound”. You simply roll a D6 add “6” to it and if it beats the unit or models bravery they suffer mortal wounds for every number higher. A great bonus instant mortal wound attack. Then for melee your terrible beast has fangs with 3 attacks, 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, -2 rend and D6 damage. Oh if you roll a 6 or more on a wound roll they are 6 MORTAL WOUNDS instead. Then on top of that claws with, 4 attacks (damage table) 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, -1 rend and do a D3 damage. Add your king in there who has 5 attacks, 3+ to hit, 3+ to wound, -1 rend and 1 damage! There is a good chance you are doing at least 15 WOUNDS every combat phase!!
Oh, if they somehow kill him, he explodes into a swarm of bats for D3 mortal wounds on every units within 3 inches of himself! Also, just because GW thinks he needs a command ability, (so no casting roll needed) he can summon, (which you need to pay points for) a unit of 3 crypt horrors or crypt flayers 3 inches from any table edge at least 9 inches away from enemy models. More on that later but like I was saying, your opponent will have nightmares!!
Then you have 10 Crypt Ghouls which are a not so great battleline units… For 100 points you get a 6 move which is fast and 10 bravery so they are not running, but they have only 1 wound and a 6+ save. For combat they have 2 attacks 4+ to hit, 4+ to wound, no rend and 1 damge. Balance all that out by adding free models to them….
Finally it comes with a unit of 3 Crypt Horrors which can hit like a cannon ball! They move 7, have 4 wounds with 5+ save, and 10 bravery. They each have 3 attacks with 4+ to hit, 3+ to wound, doing 2 damage. On a wound roll of 6 it deals 3 damage and they can also reroll missed attacks if near the king. The main downfall being these guys are kind of a glass cannon, which mean they would be great to summon into the game (see command ability above). Also the have regeneration 1 every turn which makes them slightly less squishy.
So let’s get your second battle line unit up which is another 10 Crypt Ghouls, and to bolster them we will get a Crypt Ghast. Bringing you to 820 points. Buy a box of 20 Crypt Ghouls because you will need the extra models to “bolster” your units and you can make 1 into a Crypt Ghast Courier. A box on ebay right now is running around $35 dollars.
- 10 Crypt Ghouls (100 points) battleline unit 2 of 2 required
- 1 Crypt Ghoul Ghast (80 points) Leader 2 of 4
The Crypt Ghast Courier rolls 6 dice and on a 2+ adds a crypt ghoul to either unit, so he can increase the size for free but chances are you are going to lose some to shooting and or bravery. This is a good way to keep them moving forward! This leaves 180 points to spend which, I would use on a Varghulf Courtier. He can be hard to find on ebay, so you will probably need to order him off of GW for 37 dollars (don’t forget to combine shipping with other people!)
- 1 Vargulf Courtier (160 points) Leader 3 of 4
Keeping with the flying, fast-moving nightmare theme, the Vargulf moves 10 and can fly. He hits like a tank with Claws that do 4 attacks 3+ to hit, 3+ to wound, -1 rend and 2 damage. His dagger like fangs have 1 attack, 3+ to hit, 2+ to wound, -2 rend and D3 wounds. He can also bring all the boys to the yard(literally) by adding to the crypt ghouls like the crypt ghast does. On a roll of 5 or 6, if he is close enough, he can add to your Crypt Horrors. Also if he is close to your king and he is successful casting a spell, this mini terror gets to reroll his failed hit rolls. Also if he kills models he heals up a d3 wounds on EVERY combat phase….
So there you go! Your very own rolling nightmare force for about 138 dollars! Give your friends nightmares throughout the year! Have a happy and safe Halloween!
“BOO!”
