40k Kill Team has been raised from the dead three times now. But after playing the latest version, I was worried how it would play. Here’s my take.

I’m back again with some personal knowledge on 40k Kill Team. Bottom Line is that it fun. But there are a few quirks to the game that I’ve run into.

It’s refreshing and the games don’t take two+ hours to play. With that being said, I wanted to talk about some of the good, some of the bad, and some of the ugly things about the game.

The Good

An absolutely fantastic part of the game is that everyone is basically a covert-ops character. It may not really be the case fluff-wise for Tyranids. But for the most part, the game feels super high-speed low-drag in terms of how cool your units are.

You can give you specialists certain gear and rules that make them, even more, cooler like the comms man, the heavy weapons expert, the close combat expert, etc. It feels like your units are a tight-knit group of soldiers that know everyone else’s strengths and weaknesses.

From a fluffy/cool standpoint of the game, it’s absolutely awesome.

For the most part, the game is very streamlined. I will say it was a little frustrating to try and learn the phase order of the game after playing 8th edition so long. For example, the charges are done in the movement phase INSTEAD of moving. On top of that, the charge phase happens before the shooting phase. It’s the small things like that that ended up being confusing at first.

But not everything can be a reskinned version of 8th edition. Games Workshop needs to change things up when they can.

The Ugly

Deathwatch

When my friends and I first started playing the game, we were all excited to learn. We all decided that we would try one of the 4 person free-for-all missions so everyone would learn at the same time. HUGE MISTAKE. The game took forever for things to actually happen and it was a real struggle to try and stay interested in the match.

I know what you’re thinking “It only took forever because you were new to the game”. Well, I thought the same thing so once everyone got the rules down and it was still a struggle. The game isn’t bad with multiple people. It just takes about the same time as a full-sized game of 40k to finish. That’s pretty rough considering everyone has 5-10 models on the board.

I do enjoy Kill Team very much. You can kitbash and customize your models to look like the elite badasses that they really are. But I would stick to doing 1v1 matches. The games are so much more engaging and streamlined that way.
