Here is how to play a Fury of the Deep AoS Fyreslayers and Idoneth Deepkin Army at 2000 points!
There is a new battlebox for AoSt that pits the Fyreslayers vs the Idoneth Deepkin in the ancient war of Dwarves vs Elves. (Durdian vs Aelfs). Buying these battleboxes are always great ways to start a new faction especially if you and a friend split one. You’ll basically get a starter force for a little over $150.
How to Play Fury of the Deep Faction Army: 2000 Points
Sometimes these are hard to come by and/or you may want to collect both armies. This article is going to cover how to play the Fyreslayers or Idoneth Deepkin into 2000 points as cheaply as possible. Note these points are based on the current points values, when the new battletomes for these armies come out (they usually do within a few months of a battlebox release) they will be obsolete and there will be updated / new warscrolls and rules.
What Comes in the Box
Let’s start with the Fyreslayers that come in this starter set:
- Auric Flamekeeper: Leader 1 of 6, 100 points (guessing on points)
- 5 Hearthguard Berzerkers: 125 points, no unit type
- 5 Hearthguard Berzerkers: 125 points, no unit type
- 10 Vulkite Berzerkers: 160 points, Battleline 1 of 3
- Total 530
How To Play Fyreslayers 2000 Point Army
This is one affordable way to play a Fyreslayers 2000 point army from Fury of the Deep and a few other sets- here’s how.
The point total might be slightly higher depending on what point the Flamekeeper at, but this is closer to a start collecting set than a start box in terms of point total. However, the start collecting Fyreslayers is one of the best start collecting boxes in terms of filling out your army and they are under $100 so we are going to add 3 of those and a box of 5 Hearthguard Berzerkers ($45) to fill out this army. Then don’t forget to pick up your terrain piece. (Magmic Battleforge $38)
- Auric Flamekeeper: Leader 1 of 6, 120 points (guessing on points)
- Auric Runefather on Magmadroth: General, 285 Points, Behemoth 1 of 6, Leader 2 of 6
- Auric Runesmither on Magmadroth: 275 Points, Behemoth 2 of 6, Leader 3 of 6
- Bael-Grimnir on Flamespitter: 300 Points, Behemoth 3 of 6, Leader 4 of 6
- 15 Hearthguard Berzerkers: 125 points, Battleline 1 of 3, 2 of 4 reinforcements
- 20 Vulkite Berzerkers: 320 points, Battleline 2 of 3, Reinforcement 3 of 4
- 20 Vulkite Berzerkers: 320 Points, Battleline 3 of 3, Reinforcement 4 of 4
- Magmic Battleforge: Terrain Piece
- Total 1995
I would recommend magnetizing your heroes on the Magmadroths so that you can swap them in and out (each kit has three different heroes to choose from) so you can choose who is on foot and who is riding based on what you want to run. You can also build Auric Hearthguard instead of the Berzerkers and run a different general and use them as your third battleline instead if you want. This is a great army to run with a path to glory campaign because every time you need to upgrade your force you can just pick up another start collecting box and get a nice chunk of the army. Note that the points are going to change when the new battletome comes out and I am just guessing on the point cost for the flamekeeper.
Now that we are done looking at the “fire” element of the starter set let’s dive into the “water” element with the Idoneth Deepkin.
How To Play Idoneth Deepkin 2000 Point Army
This is how to play another 2000 point army from Fury of the Deep this time for the Idoneth Deepkin!
Looking at the units from the starter box: (Note this army is not cheap to build out)
- Akhelian Thrallmaster: Guessing 140 points, Leader 1 of 6
- Akhellian Allopex: 125 Points, No Unit Type
- 20 Namarti Thralls: 240 Points, Battleline 1 of 3, Reinforcement 1 of 3
- Total 505 Points
So to take it to 2000 points we are going to build the reavers as Thralls so that you can start with a block of 20, that way when we add a start collecting box ($90) we can have a full unit of them for the Thrallmaster to buff.
Along with the start collecting set we need to add another box of eels ($50) to flesh out your three battleline units. On top of that let’s add an Akhelian Leviadon ($123) to further buff your thrall blender, an Akhelian High King ($45), an Isharann Tidecaster ($30), and finally an Isharann Soulscryer ($30).
Don’t forget about your Gloomtide Shipwreck terrain piece that is another ($48) but you don’t want to leave home without it.
Giving you the following list:
- Akhelian Thrallmaster: Guessing 140 points, Leader 1 of 6
- Isharann Soulrender: 80 points, Leader 2 of 6
- Akhelian King: 230 points, General, Leader 3 of 6
- Isharann Soulscryer: 140 points, Leader 4 of 6
- Isharann Tidecaster: 105 Points, Leader 5 of 6
- Akhellian Allopex: 125 Points, No Unit Type
- 30 Namarti Thralls: 360 Points, Battleline 1 of 3, Reinforcement 2 of 3
- Akhelian Morrsarr Guard: 195 Points, Battleline 2 of 3
- Akhelian Morrsarr Guard: 195 Points, Battleline 3 of 3
- Akhelian Leviadon: 380 Points, Behemoth 1 of 4
- Gloomtide Shipwreck: Terrain Piece
- Total 1960 Points
As you can see the cost for this army adds up quickly unless you manage to trade your Fyreslayer half for more Idoneth Deepkin or snag two of these you could build around a hordes army and forgo more eels. However, the cheapest way to build this out if you only have one-half of the starter set is to go with the start collecting box and get a chunk of points from the hard-hitting eels. Which isn’t a bad thing, your fast-moving hard-hitting eels are on the flanks, with your murder blender of thralls in the center marching forward to delete anything remaining. Just be ready to open that pocketbook.
There you have it, my take on getting these starter boxes to 2000 points without trading half with another person. If you are able to do that though, you will be in much better shape pocketbook-wise than without it. But if you want to keep both halves and build them out this is how I would start.
Again, though I want to stress these points and warscrolls will change when the new books come out and give these armies the 3.0 treatment.
