New Army Painter Fanatic Paints, Do They Color Match?

color matchRob looks at the new Army Painter Fanatic Paints to see how good they are and if they color match their air paints and primers.

The Army Painter regularly comes out with fantastic, innovative paint products. This new line is going to replace their current Warpaints Line, so Rob wanted to check out just how well they match with the current spray primers and air paints. Rob is also going to check the coverage and how they airbrush; that way, you can see if these are worth your hobby dollars. If you’re considering picking them up, it’s good to know how they will match your current army if you painted them with the older Warpaints.

Get Your Paints Here!

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color matchRob painted up his Custodes with all the older Warpaints, so he wants to test this to see how painting them with the new line will work in the future. They took years to create these new paints, and they are meant to cover basically anything in one coat, even over non-primered minis! They can also go right over the new Speedpaints, or you can just start and end with these new paints.

The coverage and color of Fanatic Paint is great, but let’s dive into the new paints and color matching. Just one disclaimer from Rob: he’s not in a laboratory, so most of this will be done with the eye test, but that should be good enough to see how they match up.

How the New Fanatic Paint Bottles Are Set Up

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color match 2They put all their colors into color triads (not really triads, as it has six colors), and each bottle shows what other colors go with the bottle and where that color falls on the scale. On top of that, they also give you a description of the color, which should make mixing and matching brands and colors much more effortless. Sometimes its hard to tell what a color really will look like based on the paint names. Plus, like all the more recent paints from Army Painter, they come with the mixing balls inside.

How Well Do They Cover?

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color match 3To test out the coverage, Rob painted over an unprimed base with just a little dab of Pure Red, Ultramarines Blue, and Daemonic Yellow. As you can see, they covered great and are very vibrant.

How Well Can You Aibrush Fanatic Paints?

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color match 4Since they are a little thicker, Rob will add in a little more Flow Improver than usual. You can see above the ratio he went with above.  However, this turned out to be too much, and you just need to use the same amount you would for other paints.

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color match 5Airbrushing the Fanatic paints works just as good as the Army Painter air paints.  All you need is to add some flow improver, and you’re good to go (just use a normal amount of flow improver like we said above).

How Do The Army Painter Fanatic Paints Color Match?

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color match 6Now it’s time for the real test: do they color match? The biggest areas on the paper are from the spray primer, while the larger verticle sprayed lines are from the new Fanatic Paints airbrushed. The smaller horizontal lines are from the air paints, and the lines painted on are from Fanatic paints. Between all the paints, there really aren’t any differences you can see. Obviously, he can’t say with laboratory certainty if these are 100% matched, but if you ask us, they are about as close as you can get! So, if you painted your army with the older colors, you should have no worries moving forward from Warpaints to Fanatic Paint!

Final Thoughts

Army Painter Fanatic Paints color match 7The difference in color match is going to be so small you won’t be able to see it. Other than that, they have great coverage and vibrant tones. Overall, Rob is pretty impressed with the new line.  Be sure to watch the video below for all the details!
