Painting a Loonboss: eBay Miniature Rescue

eBay Rescue Feature reBay Miniature Rescues is back with another painting tutorial video- this time he’s saving a Loonboss from extinction!

eBay Miniature Rescues is a unique channel that shows you how to take beat up, damaged minis, and restore them to their fullest potential! It’s a relatively new channel on YouTube and it’s super fun to watch what Casey is able to do with some once hopeless miniatures. He has a ton of great videos, which you can check out here!

This week though, he shows us how you can save a crazy goblin from the brink of horror!

Rescuing a Loonboss: eBay Miniature Rescue

Unpainted LoonbossHere’s the mini that will be rescued today! He got this guy for only $15, which is about $10 cheaper than a new one. You have to take into account how much your time is worth because if you get a mini that is super beaten up, it will take you much longer. Let’s see how he makes it awesome.

Stripping the Paint

Loonboss cleanerHe strips all the paint using an Ultrasonic Cleaner. So, stripping the paint takes no effort!

Getting it Ready

Getting the Loonboss ReadyHe goes over all the areas he knows there are gaps and hits them with Plastic Cement. Then uses superglue and CA activator to get all the sand off the base. Once done he puts down some glue and puts new sand down on the base.

Priming

primingFor the first coat, he uses Badger Synylrez Primer. Once that’s dry he hits white from a top-down angle. Before he moves onto the color, he does a quick Google search to get a reference piece and a little inspiration. Most look similar, but he finds a couple of pieces to work with.

Base Coats

Base coatsHe starts Minitaire Ghost tint for this and hits the majority of the model with an airbrush with this color. Then he uses a bright silver and hits all the armor. He wants to start bright and tone it down. After that, he hits all the mushrooms with the airbrush with a bunch of darker red and purple colors. Once that dries he then washes the mushrooms with a darker red wash.

Painting the Mushrooms

Painting the mushroomsBecause he laid down the red below the purple, it actually created a chipping type effect when he washed it. Instead of changing it, he just rolled with it and started to highlight the natural chipping patterns. Just use a lighter color over the correct areas. He wasn’t super happy here, so he decided to take a break on them and go to the armor.

Painting the Armor

Painting the armorHe went back and hit all the armor with a darker wash then highlighted again with a brighter silver. This turned the mini a little more dark and gave him a clearer color pattern for the mushrooms, which turned more bluish-grey.

Finished Loonboss

Finished LoonbossThis video is a little different from how he normally does videos. But he wanted to still give a lot of hints while being able to cut down production time because he and his wife are expecting their second child. Congrats Casey! But overall the mini turned out great!
