Squidmar is back with another tutorial testing what is the best gold paint for minis on the market today- check it out!
Squidmar’s channel is rapidly growing due to his great tutorials ranging from full-scale models to tips, even to practical physics! This time around he goes through a ton of paints to find the best gold to paint with, in terms of both airbrushing and brush application. Let’s check out what he thinks is the best! Just to note, we’ll highlight his favorites, but be sure to check out the whole video below to hear all his choices.
Squidmar Finds The Best Gold Paint For Miniatures
Starting out, he’s going to paint them all with the airbrush and brush on the same mini and then do a blind test at the end. That way he cannot pick something he’s familiar with. Let’s get into the paints!
All the Paints Being Tested
- Citadel retributor armour
- Army Painter greedy gold
- Scale 75 dwarven gold and elven gold
- AK interactive old gold and AK gold
- Vallejo liquid gold gold, Vallejo metal color gold
- P3 blighted gold
- AK true metal gold Vax
- Green Stuff World’s pure metal pigments gold (his favorite)
- Pro Acryl rich gold (his favorite)
- Abteilung 502 gold
Best to Paint with a Regular Brush: Pro Acryl Rich Gold/ Green Stuff World’s Pure Metal Pigments Gold
Pro Acryl and Green Stuff World Gold took the spots for best to use with a paintbrush! So if you’re primarily hitting gold with a brush, be sure to grab some of this stuff!
Best Through an Airbrush: Citadel Retributor Armour
He was very surprised but this, but it came out on top in the blind test. So if you want to get your gold applied through the airbrush, this is the way to go!
Top 3 Overall
- 3rd- Scale 75 Dwarven Gold it worked great in both the airbrush and with the paintbrush, so worth picking up for either application.
- 2nd- Pro Acryl rich gold slightly edged out the Scale 75 paint, but works great for basically anything, much like all of their paints.
- 1st- Green Stuff World’s pure metal pigments gold really took them by surprise. It just looked amazing at every angle and almost won both of the blind tests!
That does it for this test, but the top 3 were really great! The P3 paint was a little different than the rest but is darker, so could make for a great gold base coat or shadow.
