40k memes might be on the chopping block with a new bill heading to Congress here in the states. Check out the details and what you can do to fight it.
Without getting political, there’s a bill hitting Congress that might be putting memes in danger. You know all of those 40k/AoS memes everyone loves? They could be a thing of the past if this bill succeeds.
A Bill to End Our Memes
There’s a bill on the way to congress that could be putting memes on the chopping block. Essentially, there will be at $15,000 fine on anyone who shares something like a meme that they did not create. That being said, anyone who has been on the internet knows that once something like that hits the web, it’s basically free-game for people to do whatever they want.
Look at the very definition of the term meme itself according to Google:
With the rate of popularity that memes have grown into, the internet might be a much more empty, tasteless space. However, there’s still hope. You can sign a petition to trash can the bill. Hopefully, whoever introduced this bill will come to their senses and realize that trolls across the world would use this as leverage to sue anyone who touches their “content”.
Coming from Action Network:
If Congress has its way, you could soon get slapped with a $15,000 fine by copyright trolls––with no chance of appeal––just for doing normal stuff on the Internet. These trolls buy up copyrights with the sole intent of sending out mass threats and lawsuits to harvest settlements. Now, a dangerous new bill called the Copyright Alternative in Small Claims Enforcement (CASE) Act is sailing through Congress to make it easier for everyone from trolls to Hollywood producers to sue you. And it just slipped through a Senate Committee, clearing the way for a full Senate vote.
The corporate interests pushing this bill through Congress are the same ones that created the SOPA/PIPA. You know their names: the Copyright Alliance. The Motion Picture Association of America. The Recording Industry Association of America. These corporate lobbyists are obsessed with locking down the Internet and making it easy to squeeze every cent out of you, even if that means enabling an army of copyright trolls along the way.
Sign the Petition to Trash Can the Bill
With practically everyone on the internet recreationally sharing memes nowadays, we can all pitch in and Vote NO to nip this bill in the bud. Sign the petition by Fight for the Future and protect the memes we all love.
