UPS workers plan a total strike, preparing for what could be one of the largest U.S. labor walkouts in the last 60 years.
340,000 UPS workers will strike at the end of their contract in July if a contract resolution isn’t met. This could cause some issues for all those businesses in the hobbying sphere.
The Countdown Begins: UPS Workers Plan a Total Strike For End of July
UPS workers last went on strike in 1997 in a 15-day walkout that crippled the company and ended in a win for the union. UPS’ workforce today is almost twice the size it was then. About 1 in 4 parcels shipped in the U.S. is handled by the company, with the company handling 24 million packages on an average day.
According to CBS, approximately one in four packages handled by postage services in the U.S. is shipped by UPS.
Large companies like Games Workshop and Wizards of the Coast rely heavily on UPS to get their products to stores and consumers. For many, it’s been difficult enough as it is to try and get the product without there being shipping complications.
A UPS spokesperson noted that strike votes are common in contract negotiations and expressed confidence an agreement would be reached before the July 31 deadline.
Hopefully, there can be a resolution that both sides agree on before the 31st of July so that all these concerns can stay hypothetical.
Teamsters is the union that has worked with UPS employees for over 100 years. They have also been responsible for high-profile union campaigns at companies like Apple and Starbucks.
