Updated Tomb Kings Army Launch Box Value is Pretty Shocking

Warhammer The Old World tomb kings launch box 1Don’t miss the updated value and pricing we may see with the new Tomb Kings Army Launch Box for Warhammer the Old World.

Games Workshop said they will not do a big starter box for Warhammer The Old World. However, it looks like both the Bretonnians and Tomb Kings will be getting their own Army box sets at launch. So now that GW has revealed the Tomb Kings army box, it’s time to start estimating the price and how much you could save on it!

Remember, though, this is based on recent releases (taking comparisons from the Horus Heresy Age of Darkness box as the ‘Age of Sigmar’ equivalent). So, as nothing is confirmed until they say it is, don’t get too hyped or mad at the value.

Tomb Kings Launch Army Box Set

The Liche Priests have exhumed a horde of 93 Tomb Kings miniatures, including the magnificent new Liche Priest on Necrolith Bone Dragon (which can additionally build a Tomb King on foot, or be built instead as a Tomb King on Bone Dragon). The rest is made up of enough classic kits to create an army fit for Settra himself – 40 Skeleton Warriors, 32 Skeleton archers, 16 Skeleton Horsemen, and three Skeleton Chariots.

First off, The Age of Darkness box for Horus Heresy retails for $310. That box comes with 54 miniatures compared to the 93 in the Tomb Kings Army Box. With the model count inside, we are shocked that the retail price is $290 for the Tomb Kings Army Box. Perhaps they are being generous on the price to hype up Warhammer The Old World (TOW)? Let’s hope so; as they said, this box contains a 1,250-point army.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there are Warhammer Fantasy units still for sale in the Warhammer Store that may shed some light on how they will price the upcoming TOW kits.

In their Bretonnia army construction article, Games Workshop said that armies would be 2,000 points. So, both the Bretonnian and Tomb Kings army boxes may be a good step towards collecting a whole army.

The Old World Core Set – Tomb Kings of Khemri Edition

Now that we have seen the pricing for the launch of Warhammer the Old World, we have a better idea of the values for all these units.

  • 2x 16 Archers $80 (two halves of a full skeleton kit to make all archers)
  • 2x 20 Infantry $100 ($80 for 32 skeletons in total; this is basically one box with two extra sprues of spearmen and extra shields)
  • 16 Cavalry $60 (The new box comes with 16 models, which can be built into archers and horsemen)
  • 1x 3 Chariots $80
  • Bone Dragon: $100 (based on Gobsprakk kit, as it’s about the same size and has two build options. It could be more in line with the Ogor Stornhorn or the Zombie Dragon for AoS at $70 each, as both were previously part of Warhammer Fantasy and on similar-sized bases. )
  • Warhammer The Old World Rules (not Tomb Kings, as it has Ghal Maraz on the cover) $70
  • Templates and dice Added value

Total MSRP $490

Total value vs $290 box price: $200 (Versus ~$250 for Age of Darkness Starter Box)

Thoughts on the Value

This is actually pretty close to the value for the Age of Darkness box. However, the prices could be a little bit all over the place. If you look at GW’s site, they currently have units of 10 Dark Elf Spearmen (on square bases in the picture) for $40 for 10. So there’s a chance some of these are even more expensive.

Again, many of these are older kits, but judging from GW’s current pricing, they don’t seem to care too much about the model’s age for units. They do for characters, but even super-old units seem to cost about the same as brand-new units now. Either way, at $200, this box has a ton of value!

Compared to the Previous Warhammer Fantasy Battalion Box

Tomb Kings Army Box Leaked(Old Tomb Kings Batallion Box, Originally $75, currently selling for over $400 on eBay now)

The old Warhammer Fantasy Battalion boxes were morphed into Start Collecting boxes in 2016, which became Combat Patrols (40k) and Vanguard Boxes (for AoS). With the Vanguard Boxes retailing at $140, doubling that could mean that the pice of $290 for the launch box of Tomb Kings for Warhammer The Old World was totally feasible. Honestly, this box is double the minis and will be about double the cost, so we can’t complain.
