With a deepfake landing on YouTuber a job at Lucasfilm, it looks like Warhammer isn’t the only place digital skills can benefit artists IRL!
You may remember Mark Hamil’s CGI face during Mandalorian and unfortunately the outpour of criticisms. Well, one of the most popular re-touches involved a talented artist animator doing a Deepfake that made it look way better!
If you haven’t seen it already, check out the full video below and maybe give Shamook a like and subscribe to his channel!
Now let’s check out the details!
On the left, you can see the official release version, and on the right, you can see YouTuber Shamook’s version. Pretty much everyone who has seen both seems to agree that Shamook’s is strictly better. The lighting and face textures look miles better creating a final product that looks much more like Mark Hamil than even what Disney was able to come up with.
A few months have passed since his success and he recently gave an update to his fans via his newest video comment section:
As some of you may already know, I joined ILM/Lucasfilms a few months ago and haven’t had the time to work on any new YouTube content. Now I’ve settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They’ll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart. Enjoy!
It seems that his role/new job is Senior Facial Capture Artist, which is concerned with placing facial acting performances on CGI characters. Seems pretty in line with his Deepfake work!
Additionally, this seems to pave the way that Disney is either willing or actively looking for talent within the fandom! That means more passion and love of Star Wars within the teams and probably better products long-term!
Are you excited about more Star Wars in the future? Are you happy for Shamook?
