The Adepticon 2024 Golden Demon and Slayer Sword award has been passed out, and this year’s selection of winners looks phenomenal!
The 2024 Golden Demon painting competition held at this year’s Adepticon raised the bar even more with hundreds of amazing entries. However, in the end, there could only be one winner for each of the 16 categories, as well as one to take home the legendary Slayer Sword.

Golden Demon 2024 Changes
In this year’s Golden Demon competition, several changes were made to the categories, allowing for more diverse entries.
- Warhammer: Horus Heresy: Now, a dedicated category recognizes the unique lore of this setting.
- Warhammer 40k Monster and Vehicle: This used to have two categories for Monster and Vehicle models, but now they have been combined into a single category.
- Diorama & Duel: This category has been merged into a single category, with a focus on the art of storytelling through the use of miniatures.
- Necromunda: This skirmish game returns with its own category, for gangers and terrain alike.
- Blood Bowl: The popular fantasy football game has returned, featuring unique teams and coaches.
- Epic Scale: Previously named “Small Scale,” this category now encompasses massive models and epic battles.
- Warhammer Underworlds: In addition to the other categories, there is a dedicated one that celebrates the fascinating warbands and characters from Underworlds.

Golden Demon is basically the Big Kahuna of miniature wargaming painting competitions, and if you want to really show off what you can do, this is the place! This year, there will be two competitions, one in North America and one in Europe. That way, you might not have to travel quite as far to get your minis noticed.
There will be 16 total categories this year (14 regulars alongside young blood and open).
Warhammer 40k Single Miniature
In the Single Miniature category of the 2024 Golden Demon competition, Neil Hollis won the Gold award, Lee Jeonghoon won Silver, and Kwan Ho Kim won Bronze.
Warhammer 40k Unit or Kill Team
Kwan Ho Kim won the Unit or Kill Team category, trailed by Sam Lenz and Lee Jeonghoon.
Warhammer 40k Large Miniature or Vehicle
Julien Charbonneau-Gravel won the Gold medal in the large miniature or Vehicle category, followed by Jesus Valera Navarro and El Kaye, who secured the Silver and Bronze positions, respectively, showcasing a diverse range of talent.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Single Miniature
In a world where magic and power collide, the Age of Sigmar competition showcased a stunning display of colors and creativity. The mythical creatures of the Mortal Realms were brought to life through the art of painting.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Unit or Warcry Warband
David Ugolini won the gold medal in the Single Miniature category, showcasing exceptional artistic skills. In the Unit or Warcry Warband category, Michael Thomas secured the gold medal, with Nikolas Rubens Mortensen and Jon Ninas following closely behind.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Large Miniature or War Machine
Ruben Martinez Arribas won the gold medal in the Large Miniature or War Machine category, outshining Liam Hopkins and Kelsey Graham.
Warhammer Underworlds Warband
In the intense and strategic battles of Underworlds, miniatures were a testament to the strategists’ skills and painters’ handiwork.
Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
David Ugolini won the Gold award in The Horus Heresy Single Miniature category in a stunning entry. His work depicted a Perturabo in a breathtaking manner, capturing the dark, grim primarch with impeccable detail.
Warhammer: The Old World
The Old World of Warhammer’s classic fantasy has been revived with miniatures that embody the rich history and tradition of the Warhammer’s fantasy setting. Each stroke of the miniature adds to the legend, making it an awe-inspiring experience for the viewers.
Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game
The Tales of Middle-earth have been honored with miniatures that capture the essence of the epic saga. From the smallest Hobbit to the mightiest hero, every detail is painted in such a way that it depicts a picture worth a thousand words.
Blood Bowl
Blood Bowl, the beloved tabletop game, sees miniature artists capturing the wild essence of fantasy football in the Warhammer world. These painters bring to life the zany characters and teams, translating their ferocity and humor into stunning works of art amidst raucous cheers and thunderous clashes on the pitch.
Necromunda
Necromunda is a category that reveals the gritty reality of gang warfare in the underhive. The miniatures are as characterful as they are detailed, with each one telling a narrative in miniature.

The 2024 Golden Demon Slayer Sword Winner At Adepticon
The coveted Slayer Sword award was won by Alexandre Dos Santos for his mesmerizing diorama masterpiece depicting Cado Ezechiar. Alexandre crafted a dualistic representation of the Hollow King’s armor, which was simultaneously present and mirrored in the water. The eerie presence of a Banshee hidden beneath the surface-enhanced the overall effect of the diorama.
What a collection of amazing-looking miniatures! While all of these certainly push the limits of skill and painting prowess, there were a ton of other miniatures that didn’t quite make the cut but were still very impressive.
