Ultramarines fans rejoice for the return of Marneus Calgar in this latest two-part airbrushing tutorial from Jack of Clubs Painting!

Jack of Clubs paitning is bringing you another great airbrushing tutorial using the OG Marneus Calgar model and focusing on Ultramarines Blue. This Masterclass series starts off with Part 1 and getting all the blue colors just right on the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines!

40k Masterclass Series: How To Paint Marneus Calgar

To start off, Jack is using a Vallejo Titan Blue over a flat black primed model. This blue is sprayed very thinly over the entire model so it’s a very dark midnight blue with some of the black showing through on the darkest details. It starts off with some heavy contrasts.

Next up for Marneus Calgar is Vallejo Magic Blue. This starts to deviate the blues from the traditional Ultramarines blue that goes over the Titan Blue. This will be used to target highlights, focusing on the tops of the armor and Power Fists. The center line is airbrushed.

Go for a distinct high-contrast look and leave the darker black and blue in the recesses of the model. Spot highlighting is used to accentuate the sharpest points on the model, giving a radial highlight to the Terminator armor. The contrast from the very dark to very bright blues skips the medium range colors to add a distinctive pop in its highlighting.

Moving away from the blue tones, paint the cloak on Marneus Calgar with Vallejo Heavy Red. Be careful not to hit the blue areas of the model. The things that catch your eye on this model are his Terminator Armor and his flowing cloak. A nice deep red color is the perfect contrast for the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines. Vallejo Bloody Red will be the next red to hit his cloak, blending the reds with high contrast focusing on the large folds to create some dip in color.

Stay tuned for the next part of the Masterclass in painting Marneus Calgar and Ultramarines blue!
