Make Your Airbrush Work for Painting D&D Miniatures

Make Your Airbrush Work for Painting D&D Miniatures

Get your Dungeons & Dragons campaigns ready for this brightly colored Owl Bear airbrush tutorial using a new paint set from Army Painter.

We are taking it to the next level with this Dungeons & Dragons featured airbrush tutorial using the new Army Painter paint set: Nolzur’s Marvelous Pigments. This Dungeons & Dragons exclusive paint set has all that you need to get your painting going the way you want it.

To start making your airbrush work for you, we begin with a black primer. The Nolzur’s Marvelous Pigments will be used exclusively on this miniature, and we will start with Frost Blue. The blues starting off add an icy color and will be thinned down for a second coat to get the base coat going strong.

Next up is Ghostly Blue blended a bit with the previous Frost Blue to make a nice mid-coat that will transition well on our Owl Bear.

The next color is Gelatinous Blue and it is an almost white color with a touch of blue. This is used to blend and highlight all of our previous blues to make our Owl Bear a Parrot Bear! Add it to your airbrush paint pot and mix it all in with the previous blues to make a natural transition into the much lighter blues. The last step for the blues will be to add some Gelatinous Blue to the paint pot of the airbrush by itself and add that final highlight for the blues.

Now that we’ve gotten the blues all done, its time to move onto the beak and other areas. We are starting this next step off with some Cambion Crimson mixed with beholder Purple and starting work on our Parrot Bear small feathers using the paintbrush provided in the Nolzur’s paint set. We are going to use multiple thin coats to keep the details popping on our model.

Rust Monster is a paint that was used on the beak but needed a few more coats than normal, so be aware of that. Paint some more of the feathers with our red/ purple mix with your brush so we can use an airbrush again on our Parrot Bear.

For an airbrush highlight on our red/ purple feather, use Pixiedust Pink, grab your hobo shield and paint lightly onto your feathers. Use 99% air and 1% paint, concentrating on where the flow of the paint is going with your highlights, building your airbrush confidence and skill.
