Next Level System Painting System With Dark Art

By Andrew Schrank | December 19th, 2019 | Categories: How To Tutorial, Next Level Painting, Videos

nlp_systemKenny with Next Level Painting is bring us another painting quick take. This time with a Dark Art Miniatures base and his Next Level System.

Kenny has been doing this for years and his experience shows. Let’s see how he recommends painting this great base from Dark Art Miniatures.

terrain primed

First things first, Kenny went ahead and primed it off-camera.

First pass deamon terrain

Then he gets ready for the next step by grabbing the Secret Weapon Rubber and Rubber Highlight paints. He is just going to quickly base the whole piece with the Rubber and then pre-highlight it with the Rubber Highlight. He also adds some white into it slowly to create a better transition towards the top.

purple heat pass over

Next up he takes another Secret Weapon paint, this time it’s Purple Heat. He’s just going to keep it super light so we don’t lose any of the previous highlights. Super basic technique, should be a quick and easy pass over.

liquid baseNext step he takes Principality Jade and Navy Blue also from Secret Weapon. He then creates a nice mix of the two just to get a good base coat on the liquid. Then, he passes over the base coat with the airbrush and just the Jade to highlight the liquid.

nose ringHe also hits the horns and spikes on the daemons head with a standard brown, no specific brand, anything will do. He follows up with the rings and paints them with Pro Acyril Bronze. He then slashes in the eyes in real quick with an Ochre and Ivory mix.

Horns based

Next up he goes over the horns again, adding that Ochre/Ivory mix to the brown and making sure to leave the brown showing through around the edge. He also adds more striations by adding a little more Ivory and adding some streaks.

mr hobby wash

Up next with the wash step. He is going to be using the Mr.Hobby Multi-Black and Solvent to cover this whole piece. First, dump on the wash and then use the solvent to smooth and spread the wash around. It should look like the above photo. Let it sit for about 15 min in front of a fan to dry completely.

skin highlights

After it’s dry, he is going to finish up the stone by dry brushing it using the same Rubber Highlight-White mix from the beginning. Then take some more Purple Heat and add a random pink to it, make sure it’s thin, then glaze in some highlights on the skin. Then add more pink to the mix and be more selective with the new highlight coat. He also touches up the horns with some Ivory just along all of the runes and a few streaks on the top.

Water driedNext up he uses Secret Weapon Realistic Water to give the liquid depth. This is a little different, but what you want to do is get a few drops in there and tilt the base to make it flow into all the space by gravity, then you can take a paper clip to smooth it out and get rid of any big bubbles. He also takes his brush and dips it into the water to moisten his skin a little bit.

Once done, it has to sit overnight to dry and the piece is complete! Make sure to watch the video below for Kenny’s full instructions.
