Going against the grain of the meta, these three 40k army lists brought units that you wouldn’t normally expect to see and did above average! Take a look.
Looking at the earlier tournaments from the weekend, we’ve picked a few lists that brought the unconventional units from what you’d normally expect to see in the factions. The best part is they held their own against the hyper-meta armies.

Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we can look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
Necrons: Stand At Ease GT- Aaron Funderburk
Sacrificing CP for its points to go in heavy-hitting units, this list only brought an Air-Wing, Outrider, and Spearhead. Operating off of 6 CP all game, this list had plenty of high-value firepower. With Doom Scythes harassing from the skies, this list brought a whopping 18 Tomb Blades with Shieldvanes and Tesla carbines.
Not only did these have a decent armor save for cheap. But they also were able to shred screens and even chip wounds off of heavier-armored things in a pinch. Finally, a squad of Destroyers were also taken for the 1CP reroll everything strat as well as a backfiring line of Doomsday Arks to melt Knights and Tanks alike.
Adeptus Custodes: Stand At Ease GT- Jordan Roach
Now that Sagittarum made it to the Troops section of the Custodes, it looks like they’re the new hotness. Bringing a Battalion of Custodes, this list had CP and enough firepower to stave off the enemy.
A Captain in Terminator armor hung out with the firing line while a Captain on Bike led the Vertus Praetors. Keep in mind that a Vexilla was also taken (probably) to stand in the middle of the Sagittarum firing squad and Orion for the negative penalty to hit bubble.
To add a little reach to the list, a squad of Aquilon Termies also came with their souped-up powerfists. These guys might be expensive but don’t sleep on them. They can easily topple a Knight in a single round of combat.
Space Wolves: Giga-Bites GT- Wes Talley
Looking at the Space Wolves, this player actually sunk a bunch of points into an Air Wing detachment bringing two Stormwolfs and a Stormfang. Making use of a mobile Lascannon/Assault Cannon platform, these guys created space for the rest of the list.
Wulfen charged ahead with a whopping four thunder hammers in each squad while the Aggressors dug their heels in the ground and unloaded a storm of bolter fire (getting to shoot twice a turn). By the looks of this list, it was VERY fast and had the firepower that could get in behind buildings where the enemy might have been trying to keep out of LOS. Great job overall.
