Want more some inspiration for your next Warhammer game? Check out these 40k homebrew army lists that crushed it out last week at tournaments.
Every faction has their “meta” units that everyone seems to run. However, the heroes of the hobby are the ones who aren’t afraid to bring the units that nobody else is using and make them work. Check out these lists that surprised the meta and didn’t do too bad!
Twisted Onslaught: Iron Warriors- Steve Tiencken
Would you believe that an Iron Warriors summoning list didn’t do too bad in a tournament? How many times have you ever heard “Iron Warriors” AND “Summoning” in a competitive format? Well, this guy made them work bringing a Battalion full of Chaos Marines for a CP battery.
Spending 1CP for the Vigilus Formation, Devastation Battery, the Iron Warriors Havocs brought along autocannons, chaincannons, and las cannons for maximum destruction on all fields (tanks & infantry). Havocs might be on the squishy side but they’re tougher than a normal Space Marine Devastator and still offer a cheap, high damage platform.
Finally, a Vanguard was taken with leftover points to bring a Contemptor with las cannons, a Sicaran, And a Rhino. This player pulled out all the stops on bringing unique units! Overall, a few units like Havocs, the Contemptor, etc. hung back and formed a firing platform while the rest of the units camped objectives down the field. Plus, with 301 pts leftover for summoning he had options on what to bring in mid-game!
Sword & Brush GT: Space Wolves- Rowan Moore
Space Wolves brought a unique list not doing too bad either! Bringing a cheap Battalion for CP, the rest of the points were dumped into three squads of Wulfen. This player went all-in on Wulfen with each squad costing about 450 pts a pop. Each one was given a mix of at least three thunder hammer/storm shields, claws, and axes.
While these guys might not have the highest toughness or the best armor save, the layered 3++ invulns in each squad is what makes them particularly deadly. Combined with their speed, the enemy might have only been able to clear off one squad before they were charged if they were lucky. Logan and Njall also made a guest appearance in the list. Awesome army!
Battle Zone Ursa: Harlequins- Taylor Pearson
An all-Harlequin list is something we haven’t seen in a hot minute, and with the faction built solely on striking hard and fast, this list didn’t do too bad! Bringing a Battalion of Troupes with Shuriken Pistols for screens and Fusion Pistols for enemy armor, these little T3 monsters raced up the board to deal with the threat head-on.
While the Troops section was covered, three Death Jesters were also brought to devastate the morale of cheaper enemy units. For the Fusion Troupe, they loaded up into the Starweavers for an added layer of protection.
Moving into the Outrider detachment, A solitaire in his lonesome glory was the Harlequin player’s wild card. Skyweavers with Haywire cannons also supported the dudes on foot. With haywire bringing most armored things to their knees anyway, it wouldn’t be surprising if this player even needed the fusion pistols in the late-game! Overall, this list was very very fast and had plenty of priority targets for the enemy to pick from. However, with their speed, it’s always difficult to juggle armies like this. Great list!
And there you have it! Another batch of unique lists from recent tournaments under our belts. What do you think about what these players brought? Do you play an all-Harlequin list yourself?
