The best way to tell the difference between the Imperial and the Chaos is to look for spikes.
Chaos Space Marines love to hang bodies and spikes all over there equipment. So if you see a guy with bones and spikes its probably a good idea to walk the other way.
Otherwise, the next thing you see may be a shell flying at your face at ungodly speeds.
