Warzone Atlanta 2018 attracted some of the most beautiful armies in the Warhammer 40k hobby. However, these amazing Adeptus Custodes won Best Painted Overall!
Warzone Atlanta had around one-hundred players bring the best of the best minis in their collection to the tabletop. The event ran a weekend-long and pulled people from all over the Country to play.
Let’s go over Joe “Papa Behre” Behrend’s army that won Best Painted!

Papa Behre’s Custodes:
On top of an immaculate paint job, there’s a massive display board that’s a bit of a “package deal” with the army. The diorama is named “Defense of the Obsidian Shrine” with a Custodian Contemptor statue standing in the middle of a waterfall flowing around an Imperial Arms wall. This seems like something Custodes would definitely be hanging around all day.
It’s one thing to paint with metallic paints. But pulling off metallic glares with different shades of paint is a whole different ball game. If you want to talk about talent, this is it.
So much love as gone into every single mini. Even the T3 nameless models that every army should have!
The shading and texture highlights on every muscle from the Vindicare was gone over and given the appropriate amount of attention. This is a painstakingly long process that most people tend to neglect.

If you didn’t know it, his Custodes actually won first place back at NoVA. Be sure to look at his list from the event.
We’d like to give Joe “Papa Behre” Behrend a well-deserved congratulations on his hobby excellence. Hopefully, this has inspired you to slow down and go over your models again and bring them up past “tabletop quality”.
