Games Workshop just gave us our first Codex: Astra Militarum teaser. Feast you eyes on the rules for the Catachan regiment.
Games Workshop just gave us our first preview of Codex: Astra Militarum. The new codex will feature rules for 8 regiments. Regimental Doctrines will work along the same line as Chapter Tactics, Legion Traits, and forge world Dogmas. The Regimental Doctrines will reflect the strengths of each regiment and the different fighting styles of the Astra Militarum. Let see what they had to say about Catachan.
Every Regimental Doctrine applies to both your infantry and vehicles, meaning whether you’re marching with the Mordians or claiming victory for the Valhallans you’ll be able to do so with the army you want to build.
Brutal Strength is going to show off the guerrilla warfare expertise of the Catachan. It gives Infantry models with this doctrine +1 to their Strength Characteristic, and if they’re within 6″ of a friendly Catachan Officer they’re also going to get +1 to their Leadership. One of the really neat features is how it effects the vehicles. A Vehicle with this doctrine that fires with a weapon that makes a random number of attacks, Heavy D6 or Heavy 2D6 are two examples given, can re-roll one of the dice used to determine the amount of attacks it can make. This is really going to come in play if you roll low when determining the number of attacks you’re able to make.
There are all sorts of uses for Brutal Strength, and nearly all of them are more sensible than using the Deathstrike – but none are quite so fun, or quite so Catachan. With each hit causing a mortal wound, every single shot counts – Brutal Strength makes sure the deathstrike missile lives up to its name.
The Vortex Missile can be used before you fire a Deathstrike missile and will cost you 3 CP’s, but if used properly it can be devastating. It allows you to re-roll failed hit rolls for that shot, and add 1 to the roll made to determine wether other units within 6″ are hit. Furthermore, roll a dice for a model that is wounded, but not slain, on a 6 the model suffers another D6 mortal wounds. Sit back, launch your Vortex Missiles, and watch your opponent run for the hills!
Of course, if you like infantry-based Catachan armies, they’re still a solid choice, with Catachan Command Squads being a particularly powerful option.
If anyone charges you, they’ll have to walk through a wall of flame, and then, if you’ve got a command point to spare, suffer some deadly mortal wounds from Vicious Traps.
The new teaser is making the Astra Militarum look very strong both offensively and defensively. The Brutal Strength ability is going to make your Infantry and vehicles even more deadly than they already were. Follow that up with the Vortex Missile Stratagem, lay down some traps for defense with the Vicious Traps Stratagem, and the Catachan are looking like a well rounded army.
Make sure you check back in with us tomorrow when they reveal teasers for Mordian Iron Guard, a regiment designed to excel at defensive order.
