Hobby Wreck Challenge Winners!

By Rob Baer | October 29th, 2011 | Categories: Conversions, Monthly giveaway, Warhammer 40k News

Were back and today i have for you the Hobby Wreck Challenge Winners!

First off thanks to all who entered! The entries were all very well done, and it was nice to break up the pre-Necron hobby monotony, with a little inspirational contest.

First Place goes to Isotope99 with his entry entitles “Seatbelts Save Lives” (a wrecked Nightwing), and I gave out a special second place finish to Reid for his wrecked Land Raider, which I will feature more in depth in another post.

I liked his entry too, because of that old piece of artwork from somewhere (that I can’t remember right now) that has a Landraider getting lit up by a Heavy Destroyer.

Isotope99 even wrote this little summary about his piece for us, thanks dude.

Dark Eldar Downed Aircraft

This mini-diorama was inspired by the new ogre firebelly, I wanted to see if I could replicate the smoke effects and also do a bit of source lighting from the fire.

I made it as a crashed razorwing with one wing blown off by anti-aircraft fire (or in this case sawed off and added to my bits box). Not sure if Dark Eldar actually use combustible fuel of any kind? However, the strong reds and yellows make a nice contrast with the normal blacks and purples of my Dark Eldar force.

The smoke began as three ping pong balls coated in lumps of milliput that were smoothed together with water and the rounded end of an old paintbrush. I had to be careful not to tip it over by weighting the edge of the base too much, but the light ping pong balls helped a lot with this. The smoke is green stuff shaped into flames, as well as my sculpting skill allows.

My favourite bit is actually the pilot who was too arrogant to wear her seatbelt and ended up going face first through the cockpit (The Dark Eldar are not known for their attention to health and safety). I was going to leave the cockpit empty, but this has a bit more story.

Models like this are surplus to the normal requirements of the game, but provide an opportubity to add a little colour and personalisation to an army. Plus TLOS means I can hide behind the smoke when the aircraft is wrecked (just kidding).

Check out the entry’s three-sixty below, and sweet WIP picture.

So that’s it. More on Reid’s entry next time ( I also still need your address sir). Plus don’t forget about our next contest; TanksGiving. -MBG
