Let’s see how to do it.
How to Paint Rust On Miniatures: Hellfire Hobbies Tutorial
Considering this is more of an effect, you’ll need to get your miniature mostly painted before adding on the rust! However, for the areas you want to be rusted, base coat them with a dark brown; now let’s see how to do it!
Step 1:
He starts with Skrag Brown and dabs it on the brown areas with an older brush. This isn’t drybrushing, this is dabbing it on (a little more than stippling), and you could also use a sponge for this as well. He tries to do this in patches, as rust is generally in splotches, not uniform.
Step 2:
Don’t be discouraged here, as halfway through, it won’t look great. You can go a step further here and do a second smaller coat with Tau Light Ochre, but you don’t have to. Next, break out the Shining Silver and do pretty much the same thing as before, but be sure to focus on the edges only. You can also randomize here so nothing looks too uniform.
Step 3:
Now to tie it all together, he washes all the rust parts with Nuln Oil. This will help smooth everything over. Just be careful not to hit the other parts of your model so they stay the same as they are.

This only takes a few minutes and will really set your miniatures apart!
