Fauxhammer has some amazing hobby content, and if you need some sweet tips, you should follow him to get up on all your painting and conversion techniques!
This time around, he paints up some awesome Silver Templars in a very fast scheme! This is more for army painters and not so much for getting the most detailed minis you will see. If you’re painting up a whole army, this will be the way to do it! Let’s check it out!
How to Paint Silver Templars Space Marines: Painting Tutorial
To start, he will be basing his paint scheme off this older book, but if you look on the secondary market, you can still find it occasionally. Now let’s get into the painting!
Step 1:
He starts with a black primer on all the models, and then for the first layer, he uses Magnesium from Vallejo on the model through the airbrush. Once dry, he uses Dark Aluminum from the top down and doesn’t hit a ton of the model. Onto the shoulder pads, he takes them off the model so he doesn’t overspray. He does a quick base coat with Yellow Ochre and a quick highlight with Golden Yellow. He also paints up the power sword here, but if you want to see how to do that, check out his video here.
Step 2:
We’re still blocking the base coats here, and for all the purity seals and rosary beads, he uses Olive Flesh. For all the black, he uses Coal Black, like the chest plate and the backs of the knees. He also paints the lettering on the purity seals here and the edges of the shoulder pads. Then for all the leather, he uses Mahogany Brown. For the knee pads, he uses Burnt Red and just gets good coverage.
Step 3:
Now it’s time for drybrushing. He starts with Shadow Flesh and uses the drybrush as an edge highlight for all the leather. Next up, he mixes some Ivory into the mix and hits a smaller highlight. After that, he takes Dark Blue Grey and highlights all the black with it, and mixes in the Warm Grey for a second tone. Now onto the knee; this seems like a lot for a knee, but it will really make your models stand out. He starts with Bold Pyrrole Red and slowly mixes Orange into the mix as he gets closer to the center.
Step 4:
Now it’s time to clean up the metallics. If there is anything you can’t airbrush, he basecoats them with Magnesium. He’s going to mix Copper and Gold for all the gold to get the color he wants. With this mixture, he hits things like the chest plate and all the little insignias all over the armor. At this stage, to keep the integrity of the paint, he does a gloss varnish over the whole model.
Step 5:
Now it’s time for decals and weathering. To get started, you only need snippers (for clipping plastic cards and metals rather than scissors), a hobby knife, tweezers, Micro Sol, Micro Set, and your favorite decals! For application, you can see a full tutorial on how to do them here! However, you basically start with the Micro Sol, put the decal on, and then use Micro Set once it’s in place to keep it there! He uses Streaking Grime for weathering and airbrushes the entire miniature with it; this will cover everything, but don’t freak out! Then, when it’s all over the model, take a Q-Tip and start taking the paint off. You really just want to leave it in the recesses of the model, but a Q-Tip will take it off quickly; however, if you skip the Varnish step, you will also take off the paint beneath! The last thing he does is paint the lenses yellow.
