Kastelan Robot Lore: Unthinking Machines of Destruction

Armies-on-Parade-Lore-40k-admech-title-adeptus-mechanicusKastelan Robots are some of the most deadly troops the Techpriests can unleash on their enemies, even if they can’t think for themselves.

There was a little picture of these machines getting a new box soon. That got us thinking about these crazy robots! Today we’ll take a look at how they fight on the battlefield and look at some of the ancient tech still working in these today. Get your favorite Roomba buddy and learn about some Kastelan Robot Lore!

Kastelan Robot Fighting Formations

Kastelan RobotKastelans fight in maniples, if you’ve heard it’s because even in the far future Adeptus Mechanicus are still borrowing fighting techniques from the past! They are self-contained units as part of the legion. With each being composed of between 2 and 6 robots. The craziest part about them is that they must be reprogrammed by a Tech Preist every battle. They literally can’t do anything unless the program tells them to. If you tell them to kill all enemies, they wouldn’t stop until the entire planet was destroyed, whether Imperial or not.

They would walk into a lake of lave to pursue the enemy if you programmed them to do so. That’s why they always have a Cybernetica Datasmith with them. Not to save the lives of the Imperium, but to save the ancient tech housed in the robots. Do you really think they care about a few million lives in the Grimdark Future? Of course, they don’t…

Ancient Machines

Kastelan RobotThe Legio Cybernetica has marched for thousands and thousands of with their Forge Worlds. But that is nothing compared to the age of the robots. They are somehow older than the Imperium itself and are still around. They have no particular allegiance and if you can find them and reprogram them before they kill you, well, they’re yours! Sometimes they appear led by a local Tech-Priest to help win a battle and then those same machines aren’t seen for hundreds of years. Such is the way in the vast region humans call home in the future.

Extremely Rare Materials

adeptus_mechanicus_by_cribs-d4b4afsBefore the Horus Heresy, the machines had some form of self-thought. But something in the battles made the Tech-Priests decide that was not a good idea. Now they are fully controlled by Doctrina Wafers and obey nothing but their programmed commands. Still, the materials to control these machines have become more scarce than the machines themselves. Nothing is easy in the future…
