Logan Grimnar: A 40k Space Viking With a 700-Year Reign

space wolves grimnarFrom Fenris tribal brawls to leading the Space Wolves in 40k, Logan Grimnar proves that age and frostbite only sharpen your skills.

Updated April 8th, 2025, by Rob Baer with the latest information and links.

Logan Grimnar isn’t just some crusty old warlord with a beard full of icicles—he’s the Space Wolves’ axe-swinging king who’s been running the show for nearly 700 years. From brutal tribal scraps on Fenris to commanding one of the most unruly Chapters in the Imperium, this guy’s done it all—and then some.

He’s not a Primaris Marine (yet), but he sure doesn’t need to be. His legacy is carved into every frostbitten battlefield he’s walked, and if you’re into conversions, there’s plenty of room to scale him up into a hulking, custom-built legend. Let’s talk about why Logan still leads the pack—and why your shelf might be missing a serious icon.

Logan Grimnar: The Old Wolf Who Still Runs the Show

space wolvesLogan Grimnar isn’t just the boss of the Space Wolves—he’s the High King of Fenris, the head honcho of the pack, and a name that echoes like a war horn across the galaxy. Let’s talk about the grizzled legend himself and why he’s basically the Space Viking version of your favorite metal band: old-school, loud, and still wildly popular.

The Long Reign of the Fangfather

grimnarAlso known as the Old Wolf (because, well, he is), Logan has been running the Space Wolves for close to 700 years. Yeah, that’s not a typo—seven centuries of calling the shots. In Warhammer 40K time, that’s like having a manager who started before electricity was invented and still refuses to retire.

Logan’s been leading the Great Company known as Night Runner and throwing hands with everything from Chaos to bureaucracy. He’s got a healthy disdain for anyone outside the Chapter trying to poke around in Space Wolf business—especially the kind of folks who wear too many robes and take their paperwork way too seriously. This rebellious streak has earned him some spicy accusations like heresy and treason. Classic Logan.

Fenris-Born and Battle-Tested

He started out as just another tough kid in the Iron Blood tribe on Fenris. In 313.M41, while getting tangled up in a scrap with the Sea Devil and Ice Fang tribes, things got messy near an old Morkai temple. Logan ended up the last man standing, swinging his axe like it was the end of days.

Lucky for him, his one-man brawl caught the eye of Wolf Priest Ulrik (who basically went, “I like this guy”). Right when things looked grim, a squad of Terminators dropped in and scooped him off to The Fang—Space Wolves HQ, a giant icy fortress of awesome.

Trial by Ice Troll

greatwolf loganUnder Ulrik’s close eye, Logan proved early on that he wasn’t just muscle—he had grit. During the Trial of Morkai, which is as brutal as it sounds, Logan went toe-to-claw with Frostblood, an ice troll so nasty it had chewed up a whole pile of recruits. Logan killed it by jamming a broken bone into its eye while it shredded his arm. That’s not just bravery—that’s straight-up cinematic.

The Canis Helix (that magical wolfy Space Marine DNA stuff) bonded with him like it knew it had found its match, and from there, he got drafted into Asvald Stormwrack’s Great Company as a Blood Claw. Translation: rookie status, but with big potential.

From Blood Claw to Living Legend

Logan GrimnarLogan didn’t just survive; he thrived. He carved his name into the stars with guts, glory, and a whole lot of charm. Not only was he deadly, he was likeable, which is harder to pull off in a Chapter full of grumpy space barbarians. His sense of humor and magnetic presence even won over the grizzled Long Fangs, who typically treat rookies with all the warmth of an ice planet.

Wait, Is He Primaris?

Short answer: nope. As of now, model-wise, Logan is not a Primaris Space Marine. He’s still rocking that classic, chunky, “I lift rhinos for fun” vibe in Terminator armor.

That said, nothing’s stopping you from converting your Logan mini to look bigger and bulkier if you’re into the whole Primaris aesthetic. Make him a mega-sized terminator if that’s your thing. Your army, your rules.

Wrapping Up Logan Grimnar

space wolves codex cover 4th editionLogan Grimnar’s been leading the Space Wolves longer than most characters have been alive, and he’s still out there cracking skulls with that trusty axe. Not a Primaris? Doesn’t matter.

He’s got the presence, the power, and if you’re into kitbashing, the perfect excuse to build a bigger, meaner version for your army. If you haven’t added him to your shelf, your frostbitten forces are missing their king.
