prcing-and-values-shadowthroneDon’t miss our unboxing and build of the 40k Shadow Throne Battle box, as we give you our thoughts on the designs, and show you all the gotchas!

Rob is back unboxing the new Shadow Throne battlebox for the Adeptus Custodes and Genestealer Cults.  He’ll see what it takes to get them ready for the tabletop, show the size of the models, and tell you the GOTCHAS to be aware of when building them!

We are going to show you everything including the sprues, bits, and of course, the size. That way you can decide if this is worth your hard-earned hobby dollars.

shadow throne boxThis is the box we’ll be looking at today. It didn’t come with a ton of minis but actually had some value, and it comes with both new minis. With the books pushed back, you don’t really know how they fit into your armies 100%, even though we have their points.

Value:

The box contains a total of 25 minis with 2 new characters for each faction.  Here’s is the value of the Genestealer Cults and the  Adeptus Custodes together and separate.

shadow throne contents

  • Broodcoven $60
  • Neophyte Hybrids $44
  • Reductus Saboteur $35 (Based on recent characters, might be as high as $40)

Genestealer Cults MSRP: $139-$144

  • Allarus Custodians $50
  • Witchseeker Squad $49
  • Blade Champion $35 (Based on recent characters, might be as high as $40)

Adeptus Custodes MSRP: $134-$139

Overall MSRP: $273-283

Cost of Box: $170

Total Estimated Value: $103-113

So, if you break it down with a friend, you’ll be paying right around $85 a person and getting about $55 in value each. So, honestly, there is solid value inside (but still less than Hexfire, which got $80 in value per person) and the units included are pretty decent judging from their new rules.

Unboxing:

shadow throne box 2They more or less just throw everything in here, so while it’s not very good-looking, but it is a lot of sprues!

shadow throne box 3The story in the book is actually pretty cool but it sort of leaves you on a cliffhanger. Then the Custodes go hunting… and that’s sort of it. Until you get to the rules because the story goes into the mission and lets you play it out for yourself. They have datasheets, but nothing for army-wide rules, so still not enough to know how everything works army-wide for each faction!

Instructions & Sprues:

shadow throne box 4The new Custodes model actually has two different poses which GW never really talked about, so that’s a nice surprise. You can choose which pose you want to go with, but they do give multiple arms and 3 different heads so you could magnetize him if you really wanted to. The only thing you would need is some shoulder pads, but most people have those lying around.

His base just has one rock on it, so if you want to fill around the rest of his base, you can use the Liquitex resin sand to make it look more natural.

shadow throne box 5The Saboteur has one “semi-gotcha” part with how the plunger part fits on. It shouldn’t be too hard but might be a little annoying.

The Blade Champion sprue has a lot of arms! Overall it looks very detailed and nothing stands out as too hard to build.

shadow throne box 6The Saboteur sprue also looks pretty sweet but is a decent amount smaller.

Assembled Minis:

shadow throne box 9The kit was actually a little harder to build than Rob thought. There are just a lot of small parts and the ammo pack just didn’t fit very easily. Still, it is fairly easy overall without that many mold lines.

Blade Champion 2

Blade Champion 3This is the second pose that GW never showed and it looks pretty awesome! It went together really easily, Rob thinks leaving the cape off would be a good idea if you are airbrushing the mini.

Size Comparisons:

shadow throne box 10This is tiny! It’s almost smaller than Guardsman.

shadow throne box 11He’s about the same size as a Custodian so that all makes sense!
