battlescribe-10th-Edition-40k-army-builderThe Battlescribe data team has been chipping away at Warhammer 10th Edition data updates; here’s the latest!

Things looked grim for BattleScribe in the new edition as the data maintainers said there was a chance BattleScribe wouldn’t get updated at all with the new 10th Edition Warhammer 40k rules. Then, on July 25th, 2023, the app was updated and working for 10th Edition Warhammer 40k!  However, without the developer doing much for the app, the data team can only keep it updated as best they can.

Battlescribe Data Maintainers Issue New Warning

battlescribe-9th-edition-40k-pointsHere is the latest from the Data Maintainers after we spoke about the 10th Edition update:

NewRecruit and BlueScribe are the primary intended use platforms, (Warhammer 40k) 10.0 initial release was made as compatible as reasonably possible with Battlescribe, but will have issues on older mobile devices with low RAM due to known defects with the app.

The data standard will evolve to enable new capabilities, and if Battlescribe does not update to handle those changes then it will eventually break.

Forces (iOS/Android app) is also nearing rollout of a roster builder and should also be full functionality.

We’ve talked a lot about the issues the team has had with the developer, as he basically does nothing with the app, and it’s almost fallen apart a couple of times. Despite this, the data team has been slowly chipping away at all of the current issues.

Battlescribe 10th Edition Warhammer 40k Data Updates:

Battlescribe 10th Edition 40k Data Updates

The data isn’t 100% there yet, but they’ve been making small changes every day, which has been starting to add up! You can check out more about the recent progress with the data updates on their Facebook.  With daily progress, if you notice something wrong in the data, the odds are it’s on the docket to get fixed. You can also go to their Facebook to report bugs or issues that you find in the current data.

The new data set also works with a few other army builder programs! This is great news, as the data will eventually outpace the capabilities of the Battlescribe app. With the developer not making changes, it will eventually fall behind.

Alternative 10th Edition Warhammer 40k Army Builders to Battlescribe

The Data Maintainers have been talking about making an open-source app, and it looks like they are moving in that direction with Bluescribe and working with New Recruit. So, if you want to use something that won’t break throughout the edition, check them out below.

Newrecruit EU

Battlescribe alternatives 2

New Recruit is a modern, free, web-based army builder.

Historically New Recruit was only available for The 9th Age Fantasy Battles. Over the years New Recruit has been recognized as the best army builder for The 9th Age by thousands of people and it is now available for many more game systems.

New recruit claims to be able to interpret Battlescribe files (it was originally written as a 9th-age tournament app). You can see right there that they have a lot of game systems included, and if you want another place to view your lists (and maybe it’s good to have a backup). This is worth checking out and may be worthwhile to upload your lists into if you want a decent backup.   You can check it out by clicking here Newrecruit EU.

The Forces App

Battlescribe Data Maintainers

This currently is another app that the data works with, meaning it will have the most up-to-date data from a team that cares. It is pretty easy to use, with references for your models and plenty more. This is a great way to reference your lists without ever having to print something out ever again. It even lets you analyze the meta with game reports, so it has some really cool functionality.

View and organize your BattleScribe army lists with Forces, designed to give the at-a-glance information you need to in the heat of battle. Never print out an army list again! Forces is written natively to run smoothly on the mobile device of your choice. Whether you’re rocking an Android tablet or an Apple iPhone to the gaming table Forces will run and look great on it.

Bluescribe

BlueScribe is an army list builder for tabletop wargames; it is heavily inspired by and 100% compatible with BattleScribe, reading the same format datafiles and writing rosters in the same format.

Try it out at https://bluewinds.github.io/bluescribe/. It loads and runs in a web browser, no installation or downloads needed. For the moment, it is optimized for desktop machines; while it works on a phone, this has not been tested and is probably a bit finicky. There is no server – everything is stored locally on your computer – and other than downloading or updating game systems, it can be run without internet access. For listing and downloading datafiles, BlueScribe uses the https://jsdelivr.net/ CDN.

There is no tracking, no subscription, no paid features. BlueScribe is GNU GPL 3.0 licensed; you can freely distribute and modify it yourself, though of course I appreciate notice and pull requests if you have improvements!

So for now, the 10th Edition Warhammer 40k data remains usable with BattleScribe, but at some point, it could outpace the app, and maybe not even work on specific devices.
