Pewter Minis Don’t Have to Suck: eBay Miniature Rescue

Pewter MinisShadowsun is the mini he’s going to be rescuing this time around. To start he strips the mini of its old glue and paint. Let’s see how he goes from there.

Laying Out the Mini

Pewter Mini drawingTo start, he lays out his design on paper. Since she has so many things flying around her, it gives you a ton of room to make something cool. He wants Shadowsun right in the middle with everything pointing to her. This is where having extra bits and a 3D printer comes in handy since he doesn’t know how he’s going to achieve this yet! Also, make sure you size your parts to the current base size.

Pinning and Drilling

Drilling out the pewter miniHe drills everything out and makes sure to pin it. This helps metal models since the glue doesn’t always hold as well with plastic mini. Just to note, he printed out a generator, but you could do this with any Tau-looking bits you have laying around.

Basing the Mini & Priming

Priming ShadowsunHe uses super glue and adds on a bunch of sand to fill the gaps and make the mini look as they belong together. This adds similarity to the overall mini. Then he primes the entire model. But this is a personal choice because he doesn’t know how everything else is going to fit together.

Incorporating the Drones

Attaching Tau DronesHe cuts some wooden dowels at the size he wants. Then he angles the dowels to the angles he wants the drones at. He does a lot of testing here to make sure it will work well.

Painting the Base

Shadowsun baseHe starts with a Brown Primer over the white. Next, he varnishes it and then hits the whole thing with hairspray. This will let you get a really cool chipping effect. After that, he does an airbrush level of a bone color. To finish off the chipping he takes the back of a brush and pulls off some of the bone to pull the brown from underneath. To finish this stage off he does a brown varnish on everything to bring out all the colors.

The Diorama

There you have it! He’s going to actually paint the rest of the mini in another video, so stay tuned for more!
