1st Place: Geoff Perry – Thousand Sons Army Lists
At Boltercon 2024 GT, Geoff’s Thousand Sons army bent reality, cast devastating spells, and rewrote the fate of the battlefield. Combining ancient sorcery, daemonic monstrosities, and the overwhelming presence of Magnus the Red himself, this list wasn’t just a showcase of Thousand Sons’ power; it was a declaration that knowledge is power, and power corrupts absolutely (in the most stylish way possible).
Let’s dive into the magical machinations that led Geoff to victory.
Every great Thousand Sons list begins with a lineup of leaders who blur the line between wizard and warlord, and Geoff’s was no exception. At the helm was Ahriman, the master of rituals and seeker of forbidden knowledge. With a free ritual and the ability to give a +1 to wound rolls, Ahriman was the perfect mix of battlefield utility and devastating spellcraft.
Joining him was an Exalted Sorcerer, who brought the invaluable ability to revive models and grant invulnerable saves, keeping key units alive when the battle got tough. Pair that with a Sorcerer on a disc of Tzeentch, zipping around the battlefield while pinning enemy units and reducing their mobility, and you’ve got a team that could manipulate both the board and the enemy’s plans.
And then, as if that wasn’t enough magical firepower, Geoff’s Infernal Master joined the fray, handing out Sustained Hits to keep the pressure on and further enhancing the army’s already devastating output. All of this paled, of course, in comparison to the presence of Magnus the Red, Primarch of the Thousand Sons, and arguably the most powerful model in the faction.
Magnus didn’t just walk into battle—he floated in, radiating power, with enough stats and abilities to make even the bravest foe reconsider their life choices.
In the troops department, Geoff’s list featured two units of Rubric Marines, the bread and butter of any Thousand Sons army. These walking suits of enchanted armor are as durable as they are deadly, providing reliable ranged firepower and holding objectives like arcane sentinels.
Geoff included two units of Tzaangors to add some melee spice. While they’re not as durable as their Rubric cousins, these melee-oriented daemons brought numbers and a taste of chaos to the table, giving the list some much-needed flexibility when it came to objective play and skirmishes.
The true stars of Geoff’s list (aside from Magnus, of course) were three Mutalith Vortex Beasts. These chaotic monstrosities didn’t just pack a punch in melee—they brought a buffet of mortal wound output and even helped amplify rituals, ensuring that the Thousand Sons’ spellcasting supremacy remained unmatched. With their terrifying presence and unpredictable power, the Mutaliths added a layer of destruction and control that kept opponents guessing—and often running.
To round out the list, Geoff brought a single unit of Cultists. These humble, unassuming mortals might not have the firepower or durability of Rubrics, but they were perfect for soaking up wounds, holding backfield objectives, and generally making themselves useful. They’re not flashy, but in a list like this, they’re sometimes the glue that keeps it all together.
2nd Place: Ryan Tim – Necrons Army Lists
3rd Place: Chris Kentrup – Chaos Knights Army Lists
Geoff’s list was a masterclass in synergy, leveraging the psychic supremacy of the Thousand Sons to control the battlefield while applying pressure with melee and ranged threats. With Magnus acting as an unstoppable juggernaut and Ahriman leading the magical charge, this army had the tools to dominate every phase of the game. The Mutalith Vortex Beasts added a touch of unpredictability, and even the humble Cultists played their part to perfection.
These top army lists from The Boltercon 2024 GT saw some fantastic contenders in Necrons and Chaos Knights army lists, but Geoff’s mix of leadership, Psychic powers, and durability stood out.
Regardless, if you’re a veteran player or just getting started playing Warhammer 40k, there’s a lot to learn from these top-tier tactics and compositions.
