The new 40k Sanguinary Guard wings have sparked debate, but one 3D designer has fixed them with new bits to be angelic once again!

3D Designers Have Fixed the Sanguinary Guard Wings Already

When it comes to Warhammer 40k, nothing sparks more debate than a new release, and the recent Sanguinary Guard models are no exception. You’d think a unit of golden, angelic warriors descending from the heavens to smite the enemies of the Imperium would be universally loved. But here we are, arguing about wings. That’s right—wings. While some fans are singing the praises of the sleek new look, others are wondering why their glorious golden boys now look like they’re barely ready to catch a stiff breeze, let alone glide into battle like avenging angels.

For those unfamiliar with the Blood Angels’ lore, the Sanguinary Guard aren’t just any soldiers—they’re the handpicked elite who served directly under Sanguinius himself. That’s right; these guys have more in common with the Emperor’s favorite Primarch than they do with your average jump-pack Marine. But in the latest release, it seems like their wings have been clipped. And, as with anything in the 40k universe, if the community is divided, you can bet there’s going to be a hobby solution in 3D print shops faster than you can say, “For the Emperor!”

The Controversial New Wing Designs for Sanguinary Guard

Sanguinary Guard Primaris 2024 new blood angels space marines 1Warhammer fans love a good argument, and the new Sanguinary Guard models have certainly provided fuel for that fire. On one side, we have players who feel that the new wings are… let’s be kind and say “underwhelming.” Gone are the grand, angelic wings that used to define the Sanguinary Guard as the elite, near-divine protectors of the Blood Angels. Instead, we now have smaller, more restrained wings that wouldn’t look out of place on a regular Assault Marine. Where’s the grandeur? Where’s the wow factor? For many, this change is a betrayal of what made the Sanguinary Guard so iconic in the first place.

But, as with all things, opinions vary. Some fans have taken to the more understated design. They see it as a modern take, one that doesn’t rely on the overly ornamented look of older models. There’s a certain sleekness to the new wings that a few players argue is more fitting for warriors in power armor, ready to dive into battle rather than pose for holy art.

Comparing New vs. Old Sanguinary Guard Wings

Sanguinary Guard Wings 5Let’s rewind for a moment and talk about what made the original Sanguinary Guard such a standout unit. In the past, these models sported enormous, sweeping wings that immediately set them apart from anything else on the tabletop. They looked like angels of death, gliding across the battlefield to deliver righteous fury in the name of the Emperor (and, of course, Sanguinius). Their wing design wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was a visual declaration of their elite status and rich lore.

Fast forward to today, and the new models look more like standard jump pack Marines who accidentally grabbed the wrong kit before heading out for deployment. The downgrade in wing size and presence has fans scratching their heads. It feels like the angelic grandeur of the Sanguinary Guard has been trimmed down—both literally and metaphorically.

How Some Fans Actually Like the New Look

Not everyone is lamenting the loss, though. Some hobbyists appreciate the more restrained look, seeing it as a departure from the overly baroque style that has dominated many Space Marine models. These players argue that the sleeker wings create a more unified aesthetic across Blood Angels units. Plus, smaller wings might actually make more sense tactically—there’s only so much room for a bulky, feathered appendage when you’re on a cramped battlefield.

This perspective has its merits, even if it does clash with the more romantic vision of the Sanguinary Guard. For some, the new wings are a fresh interpretation rather than a downgrade.

The 3D Printing Community’s Response

Where there’s dissatisfaction, there’s a solution. Enter the 3D printing community! Designers have begun crafting their own sets of wings, many of which bring back the majestic flair of the original models. These custom wings are larger, more detailed, and, according to some players, closer to what the Sanguinary Guard should be. However, as of right now, they are technically only designed to work for Dante.

So if GW made the Sanguinary guard relatively the same, backpack-wise, these should work perfectly. Plus, the designer already said he would adjust the design to work once the new models have been released from Games Workshop, so it’s a win-win for everyone!

With 3D printing becoming increasingly accessible, it’s no surprise that hobbyists have turned to these aftermarket options. Whether you’re after the classic wing design or something entirely unique, there’s no shortage of choices for those looking to upgrade their models. These bits really capture that old feel of the Sanguinary Guard wing design, with plenty of feathers to descend to the battle.

Just keep in mind that these don’t come with the backpack; you simply put these wing bits on the existing Warhammer 40k Sanguinary Guard / Dante backpacks to really make your models stand out!

Whether you’re team “bring back the angelic grandeur” or team “sleek and modern,” one thing’s for sure: the 3D printing community has got your back. So, whether you’re sprucing up your models with classic wings or going for something entirely unique, the power is in your hands. After all, in the grim darkness of the far future, there’s always a solution, even if it involves 3D printing some fabulous wings!
