One more off-meta army list emerged in this 9th Edition 40k tournament over the weekend- take a look at this homebrew list!
9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and this just goes to show that it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

Bismarck Two Rivers RTT: Grey Knights- Mark Weiss
First off, let’s take a moment to realize… Grey Knights! It’s no secret that they are amazing, so in order to take a top-three slot, Mark really played well, and maybe even had a bit of luck with him. Either way, a good list helps a ton, so let’s break down their list.
Starting with HQs, He took the almighty Grand Master Voldus. Easily one of the best characters they have access to, he can cast three powers and deny three each turn, plus as an added bonus he lets your nearby Grey Knights to reroll 1s to hit! The Librarian and Draigo both have two denys and two casts as well, bringing the total count in HQs alone all the way up to 7 casts and denys. Draigo is also great in melee with 5 strength 8 -4 ap 3 damage swings.
Troops see three 5 man strike squads with halberds and a single Psycannon in each, with different psychic power in each. This allows the most flexibility with your characters and making sure you get the best chance at each power being a success.
Moving onto Elites, there is an Apothecary to help keep your elite army topped off and ready to fight at as close to full power as long possible.
The second Elite is the biggest point sink in the list, a ~550pts Paladin Squad. This squad has 4 Psycannon Termies, costing 57 pts each, while the 5 Warding Staves Paladins are close behind at 50 each, the Paragon took the Daemon Hammer and thus is sitting at a comfy 62 pts. These guys can put in work, which justifies the point cost. However, if you lose even one model it’s like losing a small character, hence the apothecary to help prevent that as much as possible.
There is also a Purifies Squad in the Elites slot. This 9 man squad is significantly cheaper than the Paladins, but in turn, is down a wound, some attacks, and loses the invulnerable save, making them much easier to kill and a little less deadly overall.
Servitors serve as the only cheap option for Grey Knights objective takers that you can essentially throw at something without protection and not worry about losing a huge portion of your army.
Fast Attacks see a 10 man Interceptor squad with Halberds, making them great mobile options to the list. The free redeploy deep strike they have also helps a ton and lets you abuse unprotected units.
Lastly, for Heavy Support, there is a 5 man Purgation Squad with Psilencers, giving them decent ranged chaff clear.
It’s interesting that they didn’t take a dreadknight, however seeing their results, maybe that was the right choice!
Overall this list offers a little bit of a different approach but we like them because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta. Even better they got great results from the players who piloted them! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army so effectively.
