Another off-meta Warhammer 9th Edition 40k army list emerged in the Norsehammer Open, check this one out!
9th Edition’s meta is again in flux, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. This just goes to show us that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.
Top Homebrew 40k Army List: Norsehammer Open 2022
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
If you wanted to see the names and factions of the overall winners, we’ve included that below.
However, we aren’t covering all those lists, instead, we will be looking at just one of our favorites this week.
Norsehammer Open: Steffen Ommundsen – Black Templars

Steffen’s Black Templar list is a single battalion led by Grimaldus, Helbrecht, and a Primaris Chaplain. Grimaldus is a decent melee fighter who also has great unique abilities and access to litanies for even more support.
Helbrecht is a fantastic support piece as the leader of the sub-faction, plus he has fantastic melee prowess at his point value. The chaplain of course provides some sustain helping you make the most of units by keeping them around an extra round or two than if the healer wasn’t there.
Troops bring in a few different options. There is a 5 man Assault Intercessor squad to help push up a are a little better in melee than other troops. There is a 5 man Infiltrator squad that leans more heavily to ranged power and has a unique bonus anti-deep striking rules (forcing units to be 12″ away instead of 9″ when deployed).
The final troop is a 14 man Primaris Crusader squad which comes with decent melee bodies and can do quite a bit of damage if the more elite half makes the charge.
Elites start off with a Judiciar, which is a perfect character for hunting other characters thanks to its great melee stats and rules. A six-man Sword Brethren squad also provides even more great melee threats that will of course lay down the hurt if allowed to make a charge.
Switching it up there are 2 Redemptors with Gatling and Plasma for some much-needed ranged threats that can help with chaff or armor threats. The final elite is a 5 man Vet squad with melee kits and jump packs bringing in a great durable and mobile threat.
Closing out the list is 3 Eliminators for some extra chip damage and 5 Eradicators which are fantastic anti-armor ranged threats!
All-in-all this is a pretty standard list for Black Templars, but it’s nice to be reminded that they are still certainly viable in competitive settings if the general is good enough!
