Saving an Ultramarine: eBay Miniature Rescues Tutorial

ebay miniature rescue commissar ultraeBay Miniature Rescues is back again with another video, and this time he’s tackling a Primaris Ultramarine sergeant in a standard blue paint scheme.

eBay Miniature Rescues is a unique channel that takes beat up, damaged minis, and tries to restore them! It’s a relatively new channel on YouTube and is super fun to watch what he is able to do with abused and unwanted miniatures. This week he shows us how to save a beat-up Primaris and make him better than ever!

Saving an Ultramarine: eBay Miniature Rescues Tutorial

The Old Model

Old Paint Job UltramarineThis is what he was working with to start, the paint looks pretty thick but he’s sure it’ll strip without issue. Let’s see what he can do with this mini!

Stripping and Priming

ultra primedStarting in the usual fashion, he strips the model clean, primes it black, then applies a quick zenithal highlight from the top down.

Airbrushing

ultramarine basedFirst up use Army Painter Ultramarine Blue and base pretty much the whole model with the airbrush. Then with some Citadel Air Caledor Sky, you can go over that base as a slight up-down highlight. Lastly, follow that up with Citadel Lothern Blue and do the final highlight on the vast blue areas. The airbrush workup is going to be the main focal point of the mini so take your time and make sure it looks good before moving on.

Basecoats with a Brush

Highlighting Stage ultramarineNow moving onto some details, grab Citadel Retributor Gold and do all the trim/gold details. Then use some P3 Menoth White Base and paint the rope and ribbons. Next, use P3 Radiant Platinum on the other metal sections like the gun and sword. The last step here is to use Citadel Mephiston Red to paint the wax seals and eyes. He does do some small highlights later but get good coverage here as this will be the main coat before the Nuln oil wash.

Washing

Wash StageTo give the mini much more depth, he uses a Nuln Oil wash and hits the entire mini. Just make sure to keep it light and not get any build up in one spot. This is an easy step but takes some time and is super important!

Final Touches

Sergent done

He did also add the white stripe to the model at the request of his client, but it is completely optional. The very last stage was some final edge highlighting but he did not show it in the video. You know how to edge highlight, so just hit it where it makes sense!

And with that, the project is done! A pretty quick and simple paint job, but it really looks great and is all about the airbrush work up. Marines are perfect candidates for airbrushing because they have so much smooth armor and not too many colors.
