Warhammer Eternal Crusade has been having a tough time over the past couple of years. Will a Free to Play version help bring more people to the game?
Steam just put out the Patch Notes for Warhammer Eternal Crusade, and at the bottom something very interesting was revealed.
The new versions of Eternal Crusade
This update also has the limited progression, class restricted free way to play the game that we’re putting into testing. It is not accessible to anyone yet unless with a key from us, or one of our partners.
As current players, if you are subscribed to our newsletter, you can expect to get a key for the free version some day to give a friend or try it out yourself during our soft-launch.
For the people that are already payed the $50, or are considering buying the game, don’t fret thinking you’ve just wasted your money, because you haven’t.
The $50 version is getting a bit of an upgrade and current players will get a nice gift from us when we eventually enable the new packages, as a thank you for enabling us to be here today and for your continued support.
So it looks like they’re going to be implicating some form of a Free to Play version. We’ve seen this in other video games, World of Warcraft has a FTP version as well. With any FTP version of a game there is always going to be a lot of features that you won’t be able to use. For WoW you don’t get access to mail, not able to join guilds, can’t whisper other players unless in a reply to a whisper they already sent, and the list goes on.
This is nothing uncommon for game companies to do, if anything it’s an attempt to get more people into the game, and grow the community. All you need sometimes is a little taste of something before you get that itch and want more, and FTP is a great way of creating that desire in the online gaming communities.
