Unbeatable Warhammer 40k Army Lists From The Competitive Meta: Sept 23rd, 2024

This was more of a “fun” week for the 40k Competitive Scene, with a huge portion of the stars taking their talents to the Champion’s Cup; we should probably take a quick look at it, followed by the Michigan GT.

The Champions’ Champions: Thousand Sons & Sisters of Battle

It’s no surprise to see Thousand Sons and Sisters take up six of the top 8 “individual” placings at the Champion’s Cup to round out the competitive Warhammer 40k meta. These have been and arguably still are the two most powerful armies in the game, with almost no predators in the meta. Nearly every team took the pair of powerhouses to round out their 8 selections, which tells you all you need to know about the power levels they bring to the table.

What really makes these armies special is their ability to “break the rules” in various ways and another clear overlap, [Torrent] weapons (which automatically hit.)

Thousand Sons’ bread and butter has been Rubric Marines all edition, but even in singles we’re starting to see some of the competitive teams’ tech show up, double and triple mutalith. This beefy unit is capable of taking a punch to set up an absolute onslaught of damage from Thousand Sons on the swing back. Doom Bolt, blanking damage, moving in the shooting phase are critical “rule-breaking,” strategies Thousand Sons have access to that most other armies just don’t.

The combination of flexibility and overwhelming firepower keeps Thousand Sons viable into anything, and absolutely dominant in a teams format where they can really pick on susceptible armies.

Sisters of Battle wal wor

Adepta Sororitas, or Sisters, on the other hand, make things happen. Transitioning from their index horde of low cost relatively efficient units to a high-cost, elite army hasn’t proven a challenge in either competitive format for them.

Transports, transports, transports! We keep seeing them, and the Sister’s ones are the best. Immolators provide crazy amounts of flexibility to the army, allowing them to split dominion units in half and send a deadly pack of melta girls to scalpel an enemy while still keeping others back for any screening or objective purposes they need. Oh and these split up units pump their miracle dice efficiency up by intentionally failing saves on low dice or spending one to advance, just to reroll the low mark for a chance at something better with cherubs.

The Dominions are also blessed with a reactive move, allowing them to get back in their Immolator after they melta you if you make a mistake walking within 9″ of them. You’ll be more surprised if you don’t see 3×3 Immolators full of dominions across from you. Don’t forget; the Immolators also deal out Ignores Cover to the rest of the army, which can come in big from their Castigators pummeling you over the top.

While Sisters have many notable units, like previously mentioned Castigators, it’s really the Seraphim with Flamer Pistols that will be your next boogie man. This unit of 10 becomes decently difficult to chip away at due to having essentially six “ablative wounds” before you get to the flamers. It can advance and shoot in Bringers of Flame and gets +1 Str on the S4 flamers to really make them hit breakpoints. They also move 12″ and have the ability to guarantee a 6 with Miracle, +2″ to move from Triumph’s normally taken Aura, and +1″ on advances and charges, with fire and fade built in! This gives Seraphim a massive (12+2+6+1+12″ flamer range=33″) threat range before they also jump back behind a wall!

Both of these armies proved why tons of damage and movement/saves shenanigans are too powerful for most Warhammer players/teams to go without.

In the immortal words of Todd Howard, “It just works.” This list plays Warhammer, it does everything you need to accomplish your Warhammering at every level. It has the skill expression and nuance to entice “professional” level players and tournament-goers alike.

There isn’t much that hasn’t been said about the list, there isn’t much changing with it week to week either, the core is three Deathwing Knights, a Repulsor with Eradicators+Fire Discipline Biologis, and Azrael with some dudes. This list is great fun, and it will teach you how to play Warhammer or hone your skills at any level of the game.

If you’re not running this list, make sure you know how to handle this list! High OC/Body Count is a problem for Deathwing Knights, as they only put 5OC on an objective and have limited swings. Single Damage also goes through them, avoiding the -1D built-in.  If you don’t have a plan and run into this list, in the competitive Warhammer 40k meta, it will be a problem, so get some reps in!

It’s always exciting to see how players innovate and adapt in the ever-changing meta. Innovation is clearly not dead, and the best time to try that new idea is right now. Especially with the new Warhammer rules changes from the latest Balance Dataslate and upcoming points changes.
